Hi,

I've signed up to donate 48 copies of "All Quiet on the Western Front", and I know there are others in the area who are distributing "Toast" and other titles. Is anyone up for joining me to organise something? I have friends coming for dinner, and I had in mind a bar crawl about 9pm - The Bishop, Black Cherry, EDT, etc. by way of distribution. But it would probably be better to attempt a bigger splash. The Plough has a book club that meets on Wednesdays, and there's a Green and Blue book club, and I've sent them a message. I expect Chener Books and Dulwich Library are also the focus for book collection (if not distribution). All ideas welcome. Thanks, Tosca

A new "literary cafe" is apparently launching on Bellenden Road on that night and will be giving copies of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie away. Looks like the perfect opportunity to give a new business some support.

You might be interested in World Book Day on 5th March when one million books are going to be given away, as a celebration of reading and of giving.

The Wednesday night book club will be giving copies of Agent Zigzag by Ben Mcintyre from a stall in the upstairs Mez at the Clockhouse between 6.00pm and 8.00pm Saturday 5th March.

    • Let's not forget this is the lowest level of local politics. If McCash really thought his defection could trash the Labour Party nationally, and it was loaded with invective and exhibitionism, then that's pretty much the definition of a "hissy fit"! Scooping the Green nomination for DaWN constituency is also going to be a lot harder for a Marxist arriviste than you suggest. There may be a wave of new, younger Polanski-ites that have joined the Green Party of E&W recently, but it's the long-standing, often retired members of the Party that tend to participate in candidate interview panels and bother voting in selections...
    • They've had 26 years or so of trading, and if anyone deserves decent retirement... In my view they're going out at the top. It's clearly being sold, assuming it all goes through as a very more more than just a going concern.
    • I had heard this was on the cards a while ago, sad, the end of an era, but well done Rod and Tim for stewarding a beacon of excellence for so many years.
    • Both your hopes will be fine, I think. Our waitress will stay on. The downstairs is getting refurbished, and the bar area enlarged, presumably by removing that awkward little 'lobby' by the loos.
