TheArtfulDogger
About 18 years ago, when my cousin stayed with me for a while, he used to go to the nandos at camberwell quite regurally and come home with little plastic pouches of the piri piri sauce they put out (they now put it in bottles and not little plastic pouches so I'm told) I wonder if he will go to the ed one if it opens or have his tastes moved on a bit ? Only smarties have the answer ! Seabag
There is nowhere to move onto 'after Nando's' it is what it is. That said there is a great French chicken shop in Notting Hill, but even they'll admit to being a posh version of Nando'sThankfully they saw fit to bottle their sauces too.Next? Robert Poste's Child
Apparently it's all halal and kosher too, so a good choice for a diverse and multicultural place. Robert Poste's Child
Doubt it. I don't think it's possible to ritually slaughter animals in an organic or free-range way - though the Countryside Alliance might disagree. Jules-and-Boo
for meat to be classed as Halal, each animal will ? in accordance with Islamic law ? have the name of God pronounced over it before dispatch. Invoking Allah before killing an animal is simply "acknowledging a spirituality behind all material existence".under EU law, all animals must be stunned before slaughter. Halal process doesn't include this and means they are cut and in full awareness. There is much controversy about the halal slaughter being inhumane. While it's something that can be understood on religious grounds on a smaller scale, this doesn't stretch to mass production and factory farming required for the quantities of animals for Pizza Express, Nandos etc who are jumping on the marketing bandwagon. Robert Poste's Child
Apparently most halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter, as required by UK law, but this is considered acceptable because they're stunned to render them unconscious rather than kill them.https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/may/08/what-does-halal-method-animal-slaughter-involve Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/163188-why-did-the-chicken-cross-the-road-innit/page/2/#findComment-1167967 Share on other sites
Jules-and-Boo
It's not that straightforward. Animals that are stunned are not Halal by definition and even then, as you say - not all meat classed as Halal actually is.There's diversion - different Halal Certification organisations view it differently - it's Halal or not Halal depending on which you ask. It's just confusing and therefore doesn't really mean much. It's just marketing. Expanding their customer base to the muslim community. Nigello
Whether the animal is stunned or not is one - very important - aspect of kosher/halal, but what if you are a humanist or a Jedi or a Zoroastrian or a devil worshipper and object to the name of a god you don't want to revere being praised verbally as the animal meets its death? Much is said about diversity so why not diversity of choice? Seabag
It all ends the same way. The chicken ends up dead as that's the requirement before the cooking /eating part.So if a little prayer is said along the way, then so be it. God of choice rest it's soul. And if is what it takes to create a more inclusive eating place, then I wish them luck. Robert Poste's Child
Halal apart, apparently these days most chickens killed for meat are gassed. Not sure if this is more humane or just grotesque. Jules-and-Boo
as I said - the principles kind of get a bit lost in the mass factory farming of animals for meat.
