Hi there, I've heard some - mainly good - things about Sydenham High, which has a relatively new head. Are there any parents on here who are happy to share their thoughts on the school and how it is evolving under a new head if it is changing at all? I'm interested in it for my daughter.

Many thanks for this in advance

Hi, My daughter goes to Sydenham High and we are very happy. Don't have much experience with previous head though.

They are very responsive and caring, my daughter loves it. If you have concerns or worries they deal with it right there and then.

Daughter started year 7 in September and loves it. We chose it because it's strong academically but didn't feel like an exam factory, we thought the pastoral care would be great (it is) and, more than anything else, she really wanted to go there. I wouldn't say sports are their strong point, and the school doesn't have a pool. (But ours is a club swimmer and trains 6 x per week - so that didn't matter to us). They made a big deal about single sex ed benefiting girls. For every paper supporting this, there seems to be another contradicting it. What they do make great use of is the alumni network (across all of GDST). So early days for us, but so far very pleased we chose it, and she is extremely happy - as I say, she loves it.

They do several taster sessions for the girls who've applied - so worth doing those if you're seriously thinking of Syd.

Hi Mischa I don't think you would go wrong with Sydenham High: very committed staff, great environment. We actively went down the single sex route for our older daughter (no brothers) and it really worked out for her. The girls emerge from Sydenham High School confident, rounded and happy and the school really encourages the pupils to pursue what they really want to do post-school. My older daughter went there for Secondary School and is now in her second year at Med School. We'll be choosing Sydenham High for our other daughter for Secondary (if she's accepted). We've met and been impressed with the new Head and her approach. As others have said here they are tapped into the GDST network which is useful, and the School do taster days which might help you and your daughter make up your minds.

    • I know I'm a bit premature but don't want to forget through too much Chrisntas cheer! Southwark Council Christmas trees recycling arrangements 2025 - bit worrying for the future that they're emphasising the free bit. "We’ll collect and recycle your real Christmas tree for free!  Trees should not be taller than 5ft. You should chop any taller trees into smaller pieces. Remove all decorations and the pot or stand and recycle it by: putting your tree with your garden waste containers on collection day requesting a free collection if you do not have a garden waste collection  taking it to our Reuse and Recycling Centre [43 Devon Street, SE15 1AL open 08:30-16:30 Mon-Sun] If you live in a flat you must leave the tree: outside on the kerb visible for the collection crew not in a bin store" I'll add the link to the collection booking service when it opens on 22 December.
    • Most homes in East Dulwich / Good Green ward have collections on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. So no changes for them this year.  But for those few local homes with collections normally on Thursdays or Friday, with Christmas, Boxing day happening on Thursday and Friday any blue, brown or green bin collections will be delayed by two days. So Thursday 25 December collections will be on Saturday 27 December and Friday 26 December collections on Sunday 28 December. For New Years day those Thursday collections will be on the Friday 2 January and those with normal collections of Fridays that will be on Saturday 3 January. To double check when your Southwark Council rubbish, recycling, food waste, garden waste collections will be taking place please please check here - https://services.southwark.gov.uk/bins/lookup
    • Luckily I don't really any regular reason to park at Dawson Heights.  It must be very difficult for the residents I do feel for them.  Thank you for them.  I just presumed that Southwark owned the estate and would be responsible for parking enforcement there.
