Hello,

I am opening the Beauty room, and I can not decide what the name could be? I have one idea, but I am not sure about it:(

Le Ciel De La Beaute` the english meaning is Heaven of beauty.

Could you please send me your ideas, and also what do you think about the French name? I would like something Natural, Organic, Pure.

Many thanks for any idea

To be honest as an English person with a faintly northern accent and definite northern vowels I feel a bit of a dick saying long French names, I would automatically shorten it to 'Le Ciel' which I have just googled and the top result was a restaurant.

Are you French, or will you be using French brands? If not, the suggested name seems a little, perhaps, de trop (and 'le ciel' means sky as well as heaven, so the name might be a little confusing).

Don't mean to be all black hat about it - I'm all for lovely salons - but I'm not getting a sense of natural, organic and pure from it. Will think on.

Ditch the French name, especially if you employ anyone from Essex who probably won't be able to remember the name let alone pronounce it without showering you in spit and disgust.

What about Wee Berries Boutique? Lovely... I may even be lured in myself for a manly facial!

I think that kind of facial tends to run expensive frank. eeeeeew!

And while we're (I'm) being puerile, what about 'Creams for Queens and Slap for Slappers'?

OK

For this one time i'll try to be serious. My other half is in the industry ( she supplies many a salon )

The names that have stuck in my head ( for the wrong reason maybe ) a top 10 chart of sorts. There are a few real stinkers that slip my mind, so I'll ask her when she comes in.

Beauty with fire

Fire & Ice

Studio by_______ ( your name here, there are loads of these )

Porquoi Pas ( in essex I think. Imagine the phone being answered "Pukkwaa paaaaaaa. 'ow may I 'elp youoooo" )

The Beauty Room ( a brighton based business )

Therapia ( gone bust )

In fact many don't last sadly.

Good luck though & keep it simple.

Yes RosieH is right - I don't think that translation works at all well.

Le ciel as a translation of 'heaven' roughly means what the English mean when we say 'heavens above' - it's not at all reminiscent of divine inspiration, it means what's overhead.

Closer to what you mean might be 'paradis' (or paradise), but you can't have a 'paradise' of something - for example a 'paradise of beauty' - it just doesn't work.

How about something classical with a slight modern reference - something like 'Mighty Aphrodite', which is about beauty, empowerment and also a Woody Allen film?

In the same vein you could play with Venus or Astarte - the Roman and Phonecian equivalents respectively?

Or Pandemos (form whom all love for women comes)?

Hmmm, it does have to resonate with the masses and not just the intellectually elite otherwise any potential impact may be lessened/ lost completely.

This is actually turning into a bit of a healrhy debate so well done you, wee berries! Please do let us know what your final decision is and when the opening iz. I am sure us forumites will be happy to flash mob you in support..

I'm not sure that's the case.

Some of the most famous brands didn't mean anything to the average punter - Aspirin, Google, Maxim, Pepsi, Tesco. Some of them did have original meanings, but the lack of popular knowledge of those didn't hold them back.

In fact if people have fewer preconceptions to start with, that can give you more options, and an interesting bit of trivia surrounding a name can be a conversation point. Doesn't make it elitist, just a bit of fun.

There is clever and there is clever and rhen rhere is me: frivolous.

I have always associated well with Tesco, the Viking God of the plastic carrier bag who plundered the Scottish isles with a Tesco bag for life full of sharp instruments.

Zits and tits has a ring but will perhsps only attract the aesthetically challenged, riddled with crusty spots and not the average ED stunner.

    • Awful. A Google search came up with this, but will he check his office email over Christmas? Maybe worth also contacting local councillor? 'To contact Southern Housing's CEO, Paul Hackett, you can try his direct email, [email protected], or use the general contact email [email protected], as well as calling their main number, 0300 303 1066, for general inquiries or to be directed to the executive level.' • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
