Hello folks,

As an East Dulwich resident I have often suffered the weekend knock, occasionally whilst I am having a lie-in on Saturday mornings, from the more evangelical churches in our area. I am an atheist, I find Yahweh revolting, I find religion ridiculous and coming from a mixed muslim and christian background, often cruel, discriminatory and self-serving. Over 30years I have argued with the door knockers, invited them in for a row, slammed the door and sworn at them to deter them from ever knocking my door again and disturbing me just to justify their religion to themselves through me.

However, as I was about to leave the house this Saturday morning past two charming, handsome black women banged on my door I opened i and laughed at them as their purpose was obvious, they laughed too. I explained I was an atheist as is my wife, and could we in some way register our out of evangelical pester power AND THEY SAID YES WE COULD!!!

Apparently if you ask the door knockers to refrain from banging on your door again they will register your objection at their church and will not disturb you again! This is the sort of service I want from my local church! And all I have ever asked for really.

I wonder whether we can create a list that the local churches can distribute amongst their selves cheaply that means that those of us uninterested in 'faith' thingummy stuff can be left undisturbed in house when they go out evangelicising. What do you think?

Sort of like the Telephone Preference Service you mean?

Wot, and miss out on the opportunity to have fun testing theories and making them sound like idiots, on days you're feeling bored and mischievous?! I like spouting from the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or - more radically, the very wonderful Pat Condell, who some people - even Atheists and Humanists - can not stand!, just to watch their little religious eyes glaze over.

ha ha, that thought struck me too.

I'm actually rather fond of the old ladies who knock on our door once every two or three months. I usually have a nice chat with them, discuss a bit of theology with them but leave them under no illusions as to the chances of my turning up to their church.

On a slightly pedantic point about evangelical churches, isn't that a tautology?

I was under the impression that Christianity was an intrinsically evangelical religion even though the vast majority don't necessarily badger others into having their souls saved.

    • Its a few years ago now, but I organised my end of year prom (for year 13) at Off the Cuff in Herne Hill - was on the cheaper side to rent and at that age, felt very cool and clubby. I had my own 18th at Whirled Cinema in Loughborough Junction but I'm not sure if they take event bookings like that anymore
    • You are right . It isn't going to change him for the better. Sending such a negative message is potentially counter-productive. Trump is narcissistic, arrogant, unpredictable, spiteful, divisive, and dishonest, with a penchant for a total a disregard for democratic norms.  He is one who bears a grudge so there's a case to be made for not offending him as he could react with a bunch of  adverse actions  such as  deciding to increase import tariffs on UK exports to the US.
    • Unless we don't fly I don't think we can be too critical of the authorities.
    • In 2016 London City Airport began using concentrated flight paths. When there's a predominantly westerly wind, incoming aircraft approach from East London (north of the River). When there's a predominantly Easterly wind, incoming aircraft approach the airport from the West: circling through Forest Hill, Dulwich, Vauxhall, Tower Hamlets, Docklands. This latter flight path affects many of us in South East London. https://www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/what-london-assembly-does/questions-mayor/find-an-answer/london-city-airport-concentrated-flight-paths The planes going into City are often below 2,000 ft, so very noisy. Sometimes we have incoming Heathrow at the same time, flying higher. The early flights that I hear e.g. 04:30 are incoming to Heathrow. They are scheduled to land at 05:30 but are 'early'. Apparently the government allows a percentage of flights to arrive early and late (but these are now established as regular occurrences, informally part of the schedule). IMHO Londoners are getting very poor political representation on this issue. Incredible that if you want to complain about aircraft noise, you're supposed to contact the airport concerned! Preposterous and designed solely in favour of aviation expansion.
