hello

Having a terrible time with our 6 week old son, h?'s so windy and just can't settle to sleep at the moment, though annoyingly it just seems to be an evenings thing. He makes terrible noises, and sometimes spits up feed varying from tiny amount to a full projectile! Last friday i literally got half an hour Sleep as he only slept whilst being held. looks like that will happen again tonight. can anyone help? I don't know what to do and totally exhausted... (no family nearby and toddler helpfully waking in night too now). This seems to have got worse Since BCG jab last thursday but could be coincidence. Am hoping for miracle advice at 6 week check today too!

infacol seems to have no effect either...

Thanks for any replies!

H

Not an expert on it but many babies struggle with wind lying down

Colief is something you can add to formula to part digest the lactose

There are thickened formulas or baby gaviscon can

Help with reflux

If it was a problem with the cows milk protein I guess it would manifest round the clock

I think i would consider a change of formula and possibly prop his cot a little

I sympathise as I had the same with my daughter, although she was breastfed only, it is an evening thing as that's when their digestive system gets tired and all the winds become painful, I found Gripe Water a bit more useful than Infacol, you can start it as it's for 1month plus. but equally try putting a blanket under the mattress so he doesn't lie horizontally, helps with reflux

good luck

I have heard excellent things about those baby hammocks, think they're made by Amby (?) for babies with wind, as the babies are not lying totally flat.

The only way to get wind up from my son when he was a newborn was to bounce him whilst we bounced on the birth ball; my husband was excellent at it and sure enough, within 3 minutes there would either be a huge burp or massive fart from our baby and he'd be happier. Good luck!

Little h, poor you, hang in there, it is probably the peak right now at 6 weeks and will start to ease gradually soon.

Gussy makes a great point about winding technique in the other thread that you resurrected..

'Burp halfway through a feed as well as after. Become a master of your little ones anatomy! The stomach is located on the right hand side with bubs facing you. Its further down than you think. Experiment with tapping, rubbing, over shoulder, facing down on knee and patting'

I know you've probably tried every different technique but we really found that rubbing quite hard with the heel of your palm, low down on the side of the back, (left hand of the back if looking at the back) quite near the bum almost, produced a bigger burp faster than patting higher up.) A few seconds of that could achieve what 10 minutes of relentless patting in the centre of the back would often fail to...

Mine had this too and after weeks off gripe water she grew out if it as soon as her digestive system matured around 12 weeks. In the meantime def try cranial osteopathy and raising the mattress a bit. Bit of baby massage and bycicle movements with his legs. It does go away though, one night my daughter just stopped!

ah, my lovely hubby should be good at low lack massage...he did it for several hours on me when in labour with no 1 son :-)

Sounds like lots of trial and error. Now if if could also find way of keeping toddler in bed overnight and to sleep past 6am....

Thanks everyone from me and very tired mr littleh .

You have my sympathies!

I have exactly the same problem, baby is 7 weeks and toddler is 17 mths. It has definitely got better though. I find the baby is happy upright. I use a sling, bouncy chair and swing in the day. I also use infacol and gripe water plus do the stomach massage and leg cycling.

The last few nights he has settled fine. As for toddler waking.... We had the same problem, my partner deals with her when it happens and I've found closing our bedroom door and me leaping up to the baby as soon as he stirs has helped! Its hard as we want to be close enough to hear her but could do with being further away so she doesn't get disturbed!!

hello all

dr and health visitors were great today....lots of sympathy too... Been prescribed ranitidine and gaviscon infant for e and dr was confident this would help as definitely reflux, i feel quite guilty for not taking him in sooner as dr said h?'s clearly in pain . Fingers crossed and we'll hope for improvements... She did say reflux gets worse as baby gets bigger, which is why its suddenly got worse.

In meantime will try various massage/winding tips from the forum and tilt the matress until i can collect the offered reflux wedge

What I found with my son (had quite bad reflux) was that he was in a lot of pain during feeds as well as after, and threw up an unbelievable amount - literally we were always changing our clothes, and had to use a throw on the sofa as it was getting ruined! We were v thankful of having laminate/wooden floors i.e. wipe clean, and I prob went through about 5 muslins a day, maybe more. Always had to have one in the pram as he'd throw up there a fair bit, and had to change moses basket/cot sheets a lot. We had the mattress raised for months and that def helped. I found that whilst gaviscon didn't stop the throwing up, it seemed to diminish the pain of swallowing the feed, which helped a great deal.

My baby boy brings up small amounts of milk, not necessarily straight after a feed but certainly not a full feed, projectile or anything significant. I was a sicky baby according to my mum so I've just assumed he is like me. There are odd days when he seems to be sick more frequently but generally it's nothing too bad, just a bit unpredictable.

The wind is more in the stomach, it's bottom burps ;-) that seem to upset him, seems to be afternoons for some reason. Unlike my daughter he doesn't seem to poo very frequently which I understand is quite normal for a b/f baby.

Amazing how two children born a year apart with the same parents can be soooooo different!

Another thing you could try, as he's formula fed, is Aptamil Easy Digest (or it might be called Aptamil Comfort now). It's in yellow packaging and you can get it in Sainsbury's. A HV recommended it when my baby was refluxy. Hope he gets better soon and that you get some more sleep! We found ranitidine helped so fingers crossed it will for you too.

    • Hi, I went to the council's planning portal to look at the application, and I encourage others to look at it. It looks like a pleasant building, with thoughtful landscaping. as Pugwash said, the big oak would be retained, only two smaller trees are supposed to be cut, one of which is already dead according to the Tree Survey. It sounds like 38 people in great need of it will gain supported housing thanks to this development, a very positive change. Of course a solution has to be found for the 3 who will need to find other accommodation during the works, but that doesn't seem enough of a reason to oppose the development. The current building is 4 stories, so I would be surprised if one extra storey was considered objectionable, especially considering the big oak stands between the building and the neighbours' back gardens and the fact that the neighbours it's backing onto are all 5 stories houses themselves or only have blank walls facing the building. In the context where affordable housing is sorely missing, a 100% supported housing development is great news. Personally I've never seen a less objectionable planning request
    • I also wonder if all this, recently events and so many u turns is going to also be the end of Kier Starmer.
    • And I replied: Mandelson and Trump have much in common. They are both shallow, vulgar and vain. They both fetishise wealth and power, irrespective of who holds it or how it was accumulated. They were both close friends and associates of the late Jeffrey Epstein and have moved in the same circles, as Ghislaine Maxwell’s address book allegedly confirms. Recognising another who is utterly transactional and lacking in a moral compass, there’s every chance of “Petie” fitting right in Mar-a-Largo. That Starmer couldn’t anticipate that Mandelson’s past behaviour would be problematic just proves how inept this government is.
    • Can't agree with that because he is a superb communicator - a really smart and  smooth talker. He studied PPE at Oxford and was communications director for Labour for many years.  Setting aside the "minor"  indiscretions during his time in government he has all the smoothness and ability to flatter Trump without appearing obsequious. Plus he can manage and exploit  Trump’s ego. He is highly polished socially, comfortable in elite circles, skilled at making personal connections. He can flatter and disarm, which is a useful tactic with Trump, who responds well to personal respect and praise. As a former EU Trade Commissioner and Cabinet minister, Mandelson understands international relations, trade, and diplomacy. He knows how to frame issues in terms of “wins” that Trump could claim credit for. I honestly hope that he survives.
