This kind of medical report really irritates me. Some medics have done research and got it published (they have to get more senior positions) regardless of how this will impact people's perception of medical advice.

I suspect most non-vegetarians will have read this report and thought - sod off. It is SO unrealistic that it is positively unhelpful. Medical advice needs to be realistic and ease people toward a more healthy lifestyle - not try and create a totally healthy life - its impossible. Go ahead, live off lentils and fish and get run over or die of skin cancer.

Eat a bit less of the naughty stuff, move around a bit more and you will feel better and maybe then you will then eat a little less of the naughty stuff and be able to move aound a little more; and so on.

People will rebel against this totalitarian message. I wouldnt be at all surprised if sales of bacon now go up.

Grrr ..

But hang on. We know smoking is bad for us so the government eventually took action. It is now taking action aganst parents with obese children because they will 'cost' us more in health bills and other drains on the social system. Now, why should this be any different? Surely irresponsbile meat eaters are being subsidised (NHS wise) by vegetarians and vegans? Does the government not owe a duty ensure public health is a priority?

There should be a tax on meat for the ill effects it has and also because it's not environmentally friendly. Do you know how much methane a cow produces? All that foodstuff is inefficient.

The sooner we all become vegans the lower the tax bill and the better our consciences.

Sensationalist bollocks in my opinion. Not the actual findings of the research but the way in which it has been communicated. This kind of stuff is a media wet dream. ?Let?s tell everyone they?re going to die.?

Anyway I?m a firm believer that we have every right to do whatever the hell we want even if it is bad for us.

Pound for pound cows produce about as much greenhouse gas as humans do. Except they don?t drive cars.

    • A shout out for Mark, owner of Pure Plumbers. 07970 971510 They're well established in the Sevenoaks area, but have recently started doing more work in SE London.  Did some v quick and efficient bathroom and boiler fixes for me; have also seen some of the bathrooms he's built, which have a nice attention to detail. • Totally agree regarding not supporting chains. Gail’s was fine but last time I went in Feb this year, actually walked out Fayetteville looking at menu and waiting 15 minutes to even get glass of water and not busy at all. Staff gone down hill - sooner it goes the better… Always prefer to support non chains - so many lovely places with good food to choose from with pleasant staff who know about customer service and sadly, non English which says a lot for our culture, pubs are also becoming abit of a hit and miss affair but maybe just unlucky. At the end of the day all about the chef. Still abit unclear where new place is located - is it down the road from Goose Green where parade of shops are before Peckham Rye?
    • Surely only where the local businesses offer clear advantages, otherwise you are rewarding what should be failure. I want to be served by a better bakery than Gail's, not a worse but local independent one. Certainly give a local independent some time to get the offer right, but don't buy goods which are worse and or more expensive just because the outlet isn't a chain.
    • Let’s just boycott all chains in favour of local businesses.  Places like Gail’s popping up everywhere has a very damaging impact on small businesses. It’s just the same as the new empanadas place but on a bigger scale. I’ll say it a million times more, we hold the power with our choices. Let’s use our power to look after ourselves and our environment (which includes small local family businesses). And yes, I also love Chacarero.
