Your thoughts on Family Art Fun

Hi Families,

My name is Claire, I am an artist and educator.

As you are a parent and I am not I would love to know your thoughts please?

I am thinking of starting an art workshop every Saturday morning for children and parents.

I have a venue in a school, resources and my skills (I am a multi-disiplinary artist, art technician and have worked on the education programme at the V&A for many years),

I also know what I'd like to teach you; My initial thoughts on the content would be to chose an artist every week and for the families to do a piece of work in the style of that artist, so they?d learn about the artist and learn a new technique; printing, drawing, weaving etc, taking that piece of work home or we collaborate on a big piece together! Each Saturday session would be self contained, meaning you wouldn?t have had to come to the previous week to know whats going on, etc!

... but I'd love to know what you all want!

How do you find current art clubs near you? Are there any? I couldn't really find much except on weekdays otherwise it means travelling into central London on a weekend, There is the Horniman and Dulwich Gallery I guess.

I was thinking 9am-12pm every Saturday for 5-10year olds.

How would you like to do it?

Would you love to be with your child and you both make a piece of art together? Or would you rather drop them off, do some shopping and pop back to pick them up.

Do you think 3 hours is too long? Not long enough? Obviously depending on my activity I can make it however long.

Do you prefer clubs/workshops that are more educationally structured or a little freer?

I have led workshops before that have been child/student only and others that have been parent and child, both are incredibly rewarding.

Please let me know your thoughts!

In terms of art stuff locally there is very little for that particular age group - most stuff round here is focussed on pre-schoolers during the week.

Main thoughts are - the age range is quite wide. I have a just 5 year old, not sure I'd like to try to do stuff with her and 10 year olds in the same session as the skills would be very different if it was a drop off arrangement (might be easier with parents staying)

I think you'd either have to make it drop off or parents staying but have a clear line on it. A mixture would be pretty unsuccessful I'd think.

Some kind of theme is generally helpful

Im hopefully going to get alot more feedback from parents and then I'l plan my sessions!

There are a couple of Sunday art drop-ins, one at the South London Gallery (free) and the other at the Dulwich Gallery (?3). 3 hours is quite long for the younger age group, I think the other two are 2 hours.

There's also this art class in the Kennington Park cafe which is similar to the idea you have about discovering different artists and art styles but I think it is a course you have to enrol on: https://www.picassosinthepark.com/what-we-do.

There is also a new Saturday morning art club which two art specialists from local primary schools are starting after Easter in the building by Dulwich Park carpark. Sorry I have no more details.

Yes the new artclub 'The Arts Factory' in Dulwich Park on Saturday mornings will be held in the BOWLING GREEN PAVILLION not next to the car park. We will be holding 2 sessions for different age groups.

Year Group: 1,2 & 3

Time: 9.30 am ? 11.00

Year Group: 4,5 & 6

Time: 11.30 am ? 1.00 pm

Dates:Sat 21st April, Sat 28th April, Sat 5th May, Sat 12th May, Sat 19th May, Sat 26th May

Cost: 6 sessions ?120

The club is aimed at any child who enjoys art. It will be bags of fun and all children will produce high quality pieces of artwork over a block of 6 sessions. Children will enjoy exploring a range of materials and techniques, art analysis and artist study to build towards a portfolio sketchbook. Over the sessions the children will develop skills across all elements of art- clay, photography, painting, mixed media etc. If you would like to see the standard and range of artwork your children will experience please click on the links below.

We are 2 specialist art teachers with many years experience of teaching in schools and with external community arts organisations. We are really looking forward to working alongside the children. The club will be very collaborative in its approach to creating artwork and sharing of creative ideas. Absolutely all children welcome.

Although I appreciate your message and its great to hear what you do, this thread is particularly to get thoughts from parents so I can set up my own workshops to cater for them.
