Having done quite a bit of driving long distances recently i have been right royally frustrated at the drivers who sit in the middle lane of the motorway when the left hand lane being totally free of traffic. No amount of flashing or indicating behind them will shift them from doing 70 or less in a lane designed to overtake slower vehicles in the left hand lane. The only response i got was anger or total lack disbelief that they are doing anything wrong. They are causing other drivers to break the law by undertaking. Ooh im getting quite angry thinking about it now.

Are you a middle lane driver, if you are, can you tell me why? (6)

Middle lane drivers don't force you to undertake, that's your choice and is, I believe, illegal.

And I do it myself, usually timed for when the middle-lane lemon is being overtaken by a car in the fast lane also.

Sometimes they realise they're clogging up the road, but yes often they're totally oblivious. From my observations recently it's either unconfident/new/foreign drivers (ie. not used to the rules here) or it's people busy texting or surfing on their smartphones.

Afraid so.

Lane discipline

You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, HA traffic officers in uniform or by signs.

Seriously though, I loathe being a passenger with my other half driving - he becomes ridiculously angry and will undertake if he can't overtake. Hate it - if they are dippy enough to be cruising along in the middle lane regardless of whether the inside lane is clear as a bell then they aren't going to notice someone racing up on their inside should they choose to drift into the inside lane.

    • Last year I ordered a coffee grinder as a Christmas present, to be sent to a friend in a Greece. The order was made in mid-November. Unfortunately, the retailer sent it by UPS. There started a grindingly frustrating two months of being caught in the Möbius Loop of UPS bureaucracy and incompetence. They kept claiming that the address couldn’t be found and despite having two telephone numbers, not once did they phone the recipient. Then I changed the delivery to an estate agent’s office in the nearby main village, situated on the main street with clear address, telephone numbers  and signs. Again, they claimed not to be able to find the address, which was farcical. Yet again, they made no attempt to phone to check. Eventually, the parcel was delivered at the end of January and yes, a vital part was broken. It was clear that the parcel was lying around in a depot and was chucked in a corner to be covered with other boxes and packets. When I tried to claim the cost of replacing the broken part, they indulged in the sort of passive aggressive stalling that corporate behemoths like them are so good at. Eventually I gave up and took the spare part with me when visiting. I have to say that they are the worst company I’ve ever dealt with, along with Scottish Power. I wouldn’t trust them to deliver anything and make sure I tell anyone who wants to listen that they should avoid them like the plague!

    • Niko is responsive, professional, efficient and super friendly. He fit me in late in the day for an important job . We had a leaking pipe under the sink which was going into the downstairs flat. He didn’t just fix the leak but checked the boiler, pulled out the washing machine and checked all the pipes, he really went the extra mile. Cannot recommend him enough.
