@Strafer - yes I know... man-up.. quite right.. but as I said I didn't recognise anyone... and everyone in there looked.. well... of a similar... well anyone there, any group there, could have been... and I should have toured the room on a quest but my intent-staring at individual groups was already attracting suspicious glances... I suppose I shouldn't have worn a mac...

So I suppose I did lose my April slightly and beat a retreat. Next time I shall post my intent (early) to wear something distinctive, develop a less obvious code to establish 'contact' like "Have you seen a lost cat in here?" (to which of course the correct reply would be "It's only a matter of time") and carry a copy of 'Waitrose Weekend' (in case Frankito ever shows) and commit every face to memory before the Adnams takes hold.

Or I could just wear a Man City scarf and listen out for LM's howls of outrage. >:D<

I'll be up for a trip to The Rose if ones arranged. I went there with my housemate for the footie mid-week. To be honest we were 2 of about 8 people in there the whole night... Can't say I was that impressed and I had high hopes for my new local.

The bar staff were really friendly though, even if you could sense the worry in the new owner's eyes.....

Still, the people make the pub I guess....

Oh gawd no.

I thought it was "something for everyone" down/up the Rose.

No ?

Nette:-S

I'm trying to think of an example of a pub that is truly "something for everyone".....

It has a Tapas menu, of which there is a review somewhere on this site(don't think the Catalonian chef is uber busy though). Big screen for the football/Rugby. The poker nights will continue I was told and an 'open mic night' is in the making.

I thought it was all quite minimalist in truth, considering the hyped refurb. It's not kitsch a la Jam Circus or indeed a traditional/country or themed pub. Perhaps I'd just call it confused, but that's what you get if you try and make a pub "something for everyone".

I read a previous thread whereby someone stated they hoped it wouldn't be a "fun pub". Which just goes to show you can't please everyone.

Either way, the most important thing for me is that that bar staff are friendly, so are the punters and the beer/wine is good. So I'm willing to give it a few more chances, despite only one choice of cider: Strongbow..Yuck!.

Short answer ? nope. Haven?t happened for aaages.

Longer answer: Various bits and pieces do happen ? different book clubs, the curry club etc. As for the original drinks, the rolling boulder that was the original core drinkers continued to grow until such time as we had visited the same pubs so many times, several people drifted away and there weren?t enough new people willing to organise and attend

But ne?er mind, it?s the Barry Barry race next weekend and I suspect plenty of people will be there. And drinking

JJF,you dont need to run it. Usually a good few spectators at both Plough & Clockhouse ends, shadow runners if you like!. Very relaxed session and good times can be had. Im doing the admin this year and always welcome a hand with that side of things. Not that I've done it before.

Sun shines on race day, could be the only time this summer.

If you do decide to come, say hello, it be Barry tae see you..

    • I am  ill in bed with Covid. It's not that I "can't be bothered" to read things. I am feeling crap and don't have the mental  energy at the moment. I am not "brushing stuff aside and pleading ignorance." I am truthfully saying when I don't presently know enough about something to be able to comment. I have always been very careful to try to  differentiate between fact and opinion in both  my posts and other people's, and I am not clear what your point is. And I am certainly not trying to wind anybody up. This is a forum. If you don't want to respond to my posts, that's up to you. I'm not sure why you feel the need to announce it.
    • @NewWave I know how you feel. Like you, I've lived and spent prolonged periods of time in some pretty crazy places and always thought I could handle a bunch of kids. But, no - they got to me and I was shaking like a leaf afterwards. That's what age does to us.  But I did engage with them, so bear that in mind.  My advice would be to never let anything like that stop you doing the things you love. I'm certainly not going to stop using the park, there's no way they get to take away our cherished spaces!  If you see them, just change tack and keep out of their way. My dog won't even go that way again, so that's that problem solved. (If I see them again, I'm going to keep taking photos from a safe distance).
