MellowYellow
Afternoon all,We had our kitchen side return done a few years ago. We are west facing with quite a bit of glass and we are finding it very hot in the summer, particularly this year though I hate complaining about the glorious weather! We are now looking into blinds / window tints / any other solition to deflect the sun from the glass. Has anyone else on here had a similar issue and found a solution? Many thanks in advance! dulwichquine
Watching this thread, our extension is like a pizza oven. We can't put up internal blinds over our huge roof light. We so regret not thinking about this when we were planning it! AbDabs
If you can get to the outside of the glass you could use greenhouse shading paint as a temporary solution. When the weather turns cooler just wipe it off Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/196560-kitchen-side-return-is-too-hot-solutions/#findComment-1258785 Share on other sites
Houseoflego
Velux blackout blinds? Keep them down from the morning to the late afternoon and the room should stay cool. It works in our loft. Inkmaiden
We don't have an extension but west facing glass doors and our kitchen was like an inferno. We got some of these blinds (the first type on the page, so they don?t have the blackout lining) and they have made such a difference. They can open from the top or the bottom so I can adjust them to let the light in and keep the sun out over the course of the day. They were a bit trickier to fit than the video suggests but I?m really pleased with them.https://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/conservatory-blinds Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/196560-kitchen-side-return-is-too-hot-solutions/#findComment-1258791 Share on other sites
intexasatthe moment
Aren't architects supposed to consider such outcomes while working out the design ?Or don't architects figure in side returns ?edited to say sorry ,not v helpful with regard to the question Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/196560-kitchen-side-return-is-too-hot-solutions/#findComment-1258894 Share on other sites

It works in our loft.We have remote control velux blinds on our veluxs - it works fine, so if upgrading i'd recommend this option. The sliding doors have no blinds but recently we have had these open anyway - and if you also have a front of house window open you will create a flow through of air Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/196560-kitchen-side-return-is-too-hot-solutions/#findComment-1259022 Share on other sites
Lynne
Air pump for circulation. I know someone who then used it in winter to pump the warm air into the colder parts of the house. maxxi
Open the fridge. Buy two more fridges and open them too. Sit in an arc of open fridges and bask.**Some carping folk will say this just increases global warming but as it gets hotter you just buy more fridges boosting industry and staying cool at the same time (you can always give away your pets/children to offset your growing carbon footprint) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/196560-kitchen-side-return-is-too-hot-solutions/#findComment-1259441 Share on other sites
