I opened this post with excitement as I thought I was about to find a dairy free alternative to babybel which my newly dairy-free kid (who loves cheese) is missing.

What about dried fruit for non messy snacks on the go? My daughter loves them. I think they are protein rich but I am not an expert on such things. Bananas are though.

Edited to apologise as I didn't register that you were asking for a 9m old. My daughter is 3.5 and I can't remember the food rules for pre-1 (amazing how quickly you forget).

While it's true that soya is a source of phyto-oestrogens, realistically how much does a baby/child have to eat before there is a problem? Most of the research on this has focused on infants receiving exclusively soya-based formula. This is a very different scenario from a weanling have a couple soya yogurt pots. If there is some research on this for older babies and children, I'd love to read it (and if I find any, I'll pass it on). xx

Thank you for the suggestions. I knew when I was lacking in inspiration there would be lots of wisdom and experience out there! Chick peas have been a hit and as soon as I remember to buy some polenta we'll have a go with that too.

Gubodge - where can you get the cream cheese substitute?

I'm not sure I am brave enough to try goats cheese. When he accidentally ate a milk based pancake recently we had 4 days of exploding nappies...

Love alieh's spoon too.

I've got an appointment with a dietician at Kings soon so hopefully some helpful suggestions there too.

    • Hello, I'm from Ireland and would love my children to be able to know the language - I can speak it but I'm not so good at teaching it. If there's anyone local who used to teach Irish at primary school (preferably Connemara Irish) and who'd like to tutor 3 boys aged 7-10 for an hour or two a week please do let me know. Thanks, Sarah
