Is the Colour Thief on Nov 4th going ahead?

Hi

I've seen the Dulwich Park fireworks on Nov 4th advertised loads but have just seen a page on southwark council website that says at a meeting in sep it was cancelled.

Anyone know if it's happening or not?

I'm confused

I'm sure that can't be true?

But hopefully it won't be that night, as we have a Goose gig to run, and I love fireworks.

I heard that the fireworks are back at Brockwell Park this year, though - they were cancelled last year. Will see if I can find a link.

No James Barber was very anti it and put out a lot of Press Bile. I think it sounded really good and I was looking forward to taking my Son to it.

I think the Money is being spent in the North of the Borough (As Usual) Instead.

There must have been a good reason why he was against it?

Councils are having to really tighten their belts, so the only real reason I can think of to spend zillions of pounds on firework displays is to take people's minds off the public services they are no longer getting for their council tax :-S

Anyway, both Crystal Palace and Brockwell Park have had excellent displays in the past, although I think Crystal Palace charges a small entry fee, so we're not exactly short of local-ish choice.

Public safety is a reason, as is the likely effect of reducing pressure on the fire and medical services. I'm in favour of money being spent on things that discourage individuals from buying and letting off their own fireworks.

Yes, that's true, that's a good reason, although the price of fireworks these days is surely prohibitive for most people anyway :)

The Colour Thief was to be a Festival of Light and Winter encompassing a variety of different cultural festivals eg Divali and Guy Fawkes night. This has now been cancelled. But now there is a more traditional bonfire night instead.

5 November 2011

Time: 6pm - 7.30pm

Location: Bermondsey Park

Cost: Free

Southwark Council's traditional firework display in Bermondsey Park.

Set in the stunning 63 acre Bermondsey Park at the south end near the running track.

As well as the much-loved rockets, roman candles and sparklers the council is also set to provide food and novelty stalls, a mulled wine and spiced cider bar and children's funfair rides.

Really p**sed off that this has been cancelled. We've scant enough reason to celebrate anything in this country at the best of times...and lets face it those sanctimonious Papists had it coming. Seriously though have they reinstated the Brockwell Park event yet or are we in an official firework night dead zone?

There's a direct train from East Dulwich to South Bermondsey.

Thanks sue - I just checked on Journey Planner and South Bermondsey station is 25 minute walk! (actually just rechecked! 16 mins of the 25 is a bus ride)

The Colour Thief event was publicised in the Southwark Life mag and I had it pencilled in my calendar. If I hadn't seen this thread I would have showed up at Dulwich Park that night!

What a shame, sounded fantastic and actually more interesting than the traditional events. I googled it and found a whole series of press articles and editorials lambasting Southwark Council for trying to re-brand Guy Fawkes night! What a bunch of nonsense and a big hullaballoo about nothing. Try to do something a little innovative and different . . .

Very disappointed. Guess we'll be heading to Crystal Palace instead.

My partner lives opposite the park, and no way is it a 25 minute walk from South Bermondsey station, more like 10 or even less.

Depends on which side of the park we're talking about, I suppose.
