Hello GrumpyGranny

I wandered into ED Forum this morning and loved seeing your query about where to find local older people to 'hang out with', or that was my take on what you were looking for - perhaps that's me projecting.

Are you still in E-Dulwich? We seem to have lost you out of this discussion you created. I hope you're just busy hanging out with those you have found by now. Of course one can socialize with people of all ages but it's important to have pals of one's own age - at least for some of us it is. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) pals don't grow on trees. Thanks a million for posting the question GrumpyGranny and thanks to all the others for their suggestions. It's good to find a virtual peer group. It inspires me to go out there and create a real one. Cheers from Peckie, 56

Hi GrumpyGranny

When I retired I joined a fitness club, there are a few in the area some with special rates for seniors. Also CEL Lewisham (Community Education Lewisham) runs adult classes so you might find something suitable on their website, google CEL Lewisham and go into Find a Course. I know they run classes in art, stained glass, jewellery making, printmaking (etching), ceramics, cookery, dressmaking to name but a few. I also became a Friend of the Horniman where you can take part and help out in lots of activities. I met a lot of people this way and made some very good friends. I believe there are walking clubs in the area, if you look at the Ramblers website, www.ramblers.org.uk you will see that there are walks in and around the south east London area. I'm sure there are gardening clubs too, if that is something that might interest you, and I believe the Horniman welcome volunteers to help the gardeners out there. I'm sure there are book clubs (I think Dulwich Library can help you here) and there were a number of knitters who got together in the area. Take a look in SE22 or SE23 magazine for local activities too.

I hope this is of help and you'll soon find your life is so full there won't be enough days in the week!

I signed up to 'walk fit' with british military fitness in Dulwich Park a couple of weeks ago. It's great fun and all at your own pace: Dulwich Park Tues,Thurs and Sat's they also have sessions in other local parks (?50 pm unlimited sessions). Someone else has put the website in an earlier post.

Welcome to ED

If you read the thread, the reason is that there is now an East Dulwich branch of the U3A, which there wasn't when it was originally referred to.

Yes I am still here! I couldn't understand it either when this thread re-appeared! However I am fantastically grateful for all these suggestions and I hope everyone else is too. Lots there to think about and choose from! We almost need a welcoming committee to East Dulwich / Peckham / Camberwell. Might be a thought to have an event once a year at the Liberal Club (near Peckham Rye station) where all these different interests can be displayed and discussed. Thanks again everyone x

    • This is horrible to hear about. We used to get daily Police patrols on foot & even regular patrols on horseback in the area. I know our local station had some bad eggs, but the officers I came across in the area back then were all a fantastic bunch. Sadly nowadays the Met's presence is non-existent, bar the weekly walk from the SNT. I hope something gets done, arrests made and the victim some genuine support and counselling.
    • Two wrongs don't make a right. Labour ran on a manifesto of "we aren't like them" and "we are different" and"you can trust us/we will restore faith in politics". They are doing nothing to convince anyone that any of those promises are being met - they are letting everyone down. u-turning on everything and are fast-tracking the doomsday scenario of a Reform government. Even the runway on the "it's all the Tories fault" is running out. I dislike politicians because they cannot be trusted and Rayner just highlighted that with ribbons on. She should have been so careful after the focus on the electoral roll issues she had with the house in Ashton-under-Lyne and then under a year later this comes up. Clearly the advice she took included a recommendation to take proper advice that she failed to do - that's just daft and the most galling thing is that she didn't just resign when this came up - she tried to spin out of it but must have known she was toast. Trust is fast being eroded. I desperately want Labour and Starmer to fix this because the alternative it too scary to think about but the way things are going they are fast-tracking Farage into No.10. Labour are letting us all down.
    • Same can be said for the current and prior governments
    • Good afternoon, We are looking for a gardener to tidy up our climbing rose. It is very high, so the work will require someone with a tall ladder. can you please recommend anyone?  thanks s
