Foraging

I love a little foraging at this time of the year.

I went for a quick reccy today at my Secret-Site though the weather's been a bit dry lately, so no show yet.

Last year I picked a few kilos of Bay Boletus in one afternoon, we dried & used them over the winter.

And if you happened to be listening to Radio 4 on Wednesday then you'll have heard Mushroom & Fungus expert Roger Phillips on You & Yours.

A bloke from my mate's cousin's rugby club ate some magic mushrooms once and thought he was an orange and then peeled his skin off with a knife.

I live in a sub-terainian bungalow (btw)

But joking aside a woman on the radio 4 clip tells how she ate the wrong thing. She was convinced it was a Puff-Ball and it turned out to be a young Flyagaric Toadstool.

"I could hear the birds feeding on the bird-table, as if they were right here next to me" she said of her auditory hallucinations.

Bless her, life will never be the same.

I foraged some crab apples from Peckham Rye Park last week to make crab apple jelly with.

I've previously harvested some cherry-plums from Warwick Gdns and made 5litres of cherry plum wine which is now a fine after-work refresher.

There were some excellent golden crab apples along Green Dale as well as an abundance of Hawes and Elderberries.. the Blackberries had been pretty much picked clean though.
