Hi there, my son (8) was recently assessed as dyslexic. The specialist recommended we find a tutor via Patoss: https://www.patoss-dyslexia.org

We did find a local tutor via Patoss but they had a 2 year wait list! We?ve decided to watch and wait to see how he copes in year 4 for now.

Have you heard of Bell House? Fantastic facility in the heart of Dulwich Village that offers advice and support for dyslexics:

https://www.bellhouse.co.uk

I?d also be interested to hear about whether tutoring is worth it as our school is not being v helpful

You can have a look at BDA website ( British dyslexia association) - they will help you with tutors and often have local evenings for parents to discuss support strategies.

The Dyslexia Guild is also a good website.

Both these offer resources, and approved tutors if needed.

There are two easy to use schemes which might help you; Toe by Toe (so called because it progresses in small steps, and Stareway to Spelling (so called because it is about remembering the 'picture' the word makes rather than being phonics based). Both books cost around ?15 each and can be bought from the British Dyslexia Assoc. Toe by Toe is about mastering reading and the other is self-explanatory! They are designed to be used little and often; 10 minutes a day or 15 minutes every other day is enough. You do not need an expensive tutor as the scheme is designed to be done by parents or TAs, and short, frequent sessions are probably more helpful for 'sticking' new learning, than an intensive hour a week.

Hi there

Just came across your post - we have been using a local tutor for around 6 weeks and Id totally recommend her. Our son is not dyslexic but has some sort of (as yet undiagnosed) processing delay and is struggling at school. Betsy has loads of special needs experience and has helped our son no end in a very few sessions. Im sure itd be worth giving her a ring and seeing where she can help?

    • A couple of updates to this terrible event:   1) In 2021, two cousins (one from Penge and one from Streatham) were convicted of murder and sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison. The Southwark News has a summary of the awful day. https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/dulwich/donnell-rhule-dulwich-knife-murderer-cousins-sentenced-to-life-for-killing-18-year-old/    2) Last week, a female prison officer from Forest Hill was sentenced to eight months in prison for pursuing a relationship with one of the two murderers while at HMP Brixton. https://metro.co.uk/2025/12/15/probation-officer-admits-relationship-prisoner-hmp-belmarsh-25501445/ https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/38203627/probation-officer-jailed-illicit-relationship-murderer-secure-prison/
    • The Commons Public Accounts Committee questioned both the CEO and MD of Capita yesterday, at their last meeting before the recess:  https://committees.parliament.uk/event/25889/formal-meeting-oral-evidence-session/.  In October they'd already expressed concern that Capita might not  be able to efficiently retake over responsibility for the administration within the timescale. Given the joint statement recently issued by Capita and the Cabinet Office I'm not sure that contacting an MP is going to add much, other than venting what I think most of us can probably appreciate of what those affected are likely  to be thinking and feeling; unless perhaps, and I hope it's not needed, to report on deficiencies in the immediate rescue actions.
    • She's responded, but I'm sure I read something in the Guardian consumer advice column. Might be some pointers if you're stuck
    • Two for Ratcliffe, the obvious one:   And one simply because it has the word  "You are nothing but blind fascists" in it.  Oh and a good song too.   Haven't listened to this for years.  Bloody good!
