That is a great idea.....6 months of hard military training and some front line action. Although I do think there is too much alcohol and drugs in the army these days too.

Anyway I think military service should be bought back but changed to the peace core and everyone has to do a year of travelling to a part of the world that needs support, learning and exchanging skills and community building. That would really make a difference to people's lives

D'you know what Jamie - I think that an updated 'Peace Corps' idea would be brilliant! Although the Peace Corps has a bit of a 'drippy' image that could do with a bit of tweaking! (I remember them from when I was a kid, and they were almost embarrassingly earnest!).

Thanks Spymum,

As you have been so kind in your compliments I have had to take some time to read your blog and I must say that "manny's" would also be a great thing for young boys to be trained into. That would make them a bit more prepared for fatherhood and reduce gun crime, because they would be far to busy with chores and being adored by loving mothers than to be concerned with ego driven fueds!

LOL! Thanks Jamie - and so as not to get off point, England is a great country, a safe country and we musn't ghetto-ise it. Get out there, reclaim the streets, the local parks, mingle, talk and don't isolate yourself. The incident at West Dulwich train station adds to the scariness, but we are not living 'apart' American style yet, thank heaven.

    • Apologies on the tardy reply, but thank you everyone for your responses and suggestions! Unfortunately I couldn't attend the recent EDF drinks because of work (I know right). But will absolutely keep eyes peeled for the next one and try and come down!
    • Because of the weather which delayed completion with roofer only being able to work certain days, it was up from November - end of January. Went slightly higher than gutters (we also had guttering replaced).
    • It's tough being a courier and the pay which is largely based on the number they deliver is miserable. Hence the staff turnover is high. EFRI was previously branded as HERMES but they had to create a new brand name because of poor performance. We get regular courier deliveries and EVRI are by far the worst. They just drop the parcel at the front door - often without ringing the bell. But worst is when they deliver to the equivalent door number on LL instead of ours on EDG. Best are ParcelForce, DHL and DPD by a wide margin.
    • I know the couple you mean, and she has always been friendly and smiley when delivering to me, but obviously in a hurry, for all the reasons outlined in the thread. My gate is always open, however (unless someone coming to the house closes it when they leave). I can't see the point of gates that have to be opened and shut again every time someone comes to the house. It just seems a waste of time, and it's annoying if you are carrying stuff. And a closed gate  conveys a sort of "my house is my fortress" feel. To me, anyway.
