Parkdrive - did you read Kid Kruger's (amongst others) sensible comments way back on this thread. How do you propose to go about taking the thousands of children up and down the country into care for similar reasons?

This tram lady just happened to be filmed, does this mean I should have filmed the lady with three young children in tow who got on a bus and gave the poor driver a torrent of abuse, including racial abuse? There are many, many people with serious mental issues bringing up children and of course with other issues too such as drug and alcohol abuse. Doesn't mean that everyone condones it but sheilarose makes some very good points about the effect of removing children from family and putting them into care.

PD you are over reacting, for the reasons others are eloquently pointing out.

Incidently, nowhere has there been any evidence presented that this woman was either drunk or under the influence of drugs. That is something you have assumed from watching a 20 second video clip. I commented earlier my impression was that of an angry woman rather than drunk one but we can't really know either way unless some factual evidence is presented.

UDT is absolutely right in that people are verbally racially abused every day of the week. Katie is absolutely right in that they don't get filmed doing so.

If you really believe that we should have a policy of taking every child into care when a parent displays racism then perhaps you would like to give an insight into how that will possibly be better for the children and society as a whole. We already have thousands of children in care who can not be found foster homes, and many of then suffer from being in care. That is why professionals remove children only as a last resort, because it is widely accepted that the best place for a child is with parents - even if that parent has one or two views that you, or I or anyone else doesn't like.

Anyway...in the case of this child, the woman has a husband, the child's father. So unless both parents really are unfit to look after the child, I can't see any reason why this child should be put into care.

I don't think anyone's trying to excuse the behaviour Otta, and she will be punished for it via the courts....but there is I think a sense of media overkill on it.

The woman's mental health is a consideration when determining what may have precipitated the incident. We don't see from the video how the rant started? There's a differnce for me between an unprovoked rant and something that may have been pre-empted by something......did a row break out for another reason for example before turning nasty and being filmed? Or was the woman already agitated for other reasons before getting on the train (an agitation that can be the symptom of a mental health condition for example)? That will all be considered in court.

I'd be interested to know how you arrive at this figure.

No and why is that relevant. Are you implying that most of the residents are racist, if so, how do you know that for sure.

Those bbqs do feel a bit like that sometimes, Brendan.

Actually it's the funerals which are the worst. Especially when you live away and meet-up with those old faces - and they can't wait to tell you about all the changes etc.

I'm afraid to say that our groovy metropolitan melting pot is some way in advance of many other areas of the UK.

    • Per Cllr McAsh, as quoted above: “We are currently updating our Enforcement Policy and changes will allow for the issuing of civil penalties ranging from £175 to £300 for visible smoke emissions, replacing the previous reliance on criminal prosecution. " Is anyone au fait with the Clean Air Act 1993, and  particularly with the state of 'Smoke Control' law and practice generally?  I've just been looking  through some of it for the first time and, afaics, the civil penalties mentioned  were introduced into the Clean Air Act, at Schedule 1A, in May 2022.  So it seems that, in this particular,  it's a matter of the enforcement policy trailing well behind the legislation.  I'm not criticising that at all, but am curious.
    • Here's the part of march46's linked-to Southwark News article pertaining to Southwark Council. "Southwark Council were also contacted for a response. "Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for Clean Air, Streets & Waste said: “One of Southwark’s key priorities is to create a healthy environment for our residents. “To achieve this we closely monitor legislation and measures that influence air pollution – our entire borough apart from inland waterways is designated as a Smoke Control Area, and we also offer substantial provision for electric vehicles to promote alternative fuel travel options and our Streets for People strategy. “We as a council support the work of Mums for Lungs and recognise the health and environmental impacts of domestic solid fuel burning, particularly from wood-burning appliances. “We are currently updating our Enforcement Policy and changes will allow for the issuing of civil penalties ranging from £175 to £300 for visible smoke emissions, replacing the previous reliance on criminal prosecution.  “This work is being undertaken in collaboration with other London boroughs as part of the pan-London Wood Burning Project, which aims to harmonise enforcement approaches and share best practice across the capital.” ETA: And here's a post I made a few years ago, with tangential relevance.  https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/278140-early-morning-drone-flying/?do=findComment&comment=1493274
    • The solicitor is also the Executor. Big mistake, but my Aunt was very old, and this was the Covid years and shortly after so impossible to intervene and get a couple of close relatives to do this.  She had no children so this is the nephews and nieces. He is a single practitioner, and most at his age would have long since retired - there is a question over his competence Two letters have already gone essentially complaining - batted off and 'amusingly' one put the blame on us. There are five on our side, all speaking to each other, and ideally would work as a single point of contact.  But he has said that this is not allowed - we've all given approval to act on each others behalf. There are five on her late husband's side, who have not engaged with us despite the suggestion to work as a team, There is one other, who get's the lion's share, the typicical 'friend', but we are long since challenging the will. I would like to put another complaint together that he has not used modern collective communication (I expect that he is incapable) which had seriously delayed the execution of the will.   I know many in their 80s very adept with smart phones so that is not an ageist comment. The house has deteriorated very badly, with cold, damp and a serious leak.  PM me if you want to see the dreadful condition that it is now in. I would also question why if the five of us are happy to work together why all of us need to confirm in writing.             The house was lived in until Feb 23, and has been allowed to get like this.
