Sorry to hear about your Dad Mick Mac. Was the cancer related to smoking? I have a similar story. When my dad got cancer and had one of his kidneys removed he was told to stop immediately. He said: "It's a bit late now," and carried on. Miraculously, he beat cancer, heart disease too. Strokes got him in the end (aged 80) after a two year struggle after his first one.

I should probably stop smoking too. I'm hopelessly addicted (over 30 a day) but enjoy it and quite frankly couldn't give a toss if it kills me. If I stop enjoying it. I'll quit. So, good luck to anyone who tries. I hope you're successful.

A little late to qualify as a new year's resolution and despite my fairly recent and staunch defence of the delightful habit I am afraid something terrible/wonderful has happened over the last week or so... I have stopped. Stopped drawing on my favourite weed that is. I am in the process now - and I fear it is irreversible - of becoming a non-smoker. Okay it has only been 10 days so far and I still miss a smoke like a man with scabies misses a scratch but I do believe this is it.

I am posting as feel the need for ridicule and accusations of hypocrisy (okay Nette I know, I know) to accompany my regular blasts of ... http://www.google.co.uk/url?source=imglanding&ct=img&q=http://cached.imagescaler.hbpl.co.uk/resize/scaleToFit/393/263/?sURL=http://offlinehbpl.hbpl.co.uk/news/2MM/DD50BA76-BF64-46A1-2EB817380D58DF45.jpg&sa=X&ei=jjqAT6fxEsL48QP5z-2JBg&ved=0CAwQ8wc&usg=AFQjCNFPhegwMzKpNDIoKidpCpe9OZ5HSg...

so why am I giving up? for the same reason I started as a kid - I thought it might be cool.

Lordy loo

I'm not that mean

(am I?)

Well done maxxi and to anybody giving up. Horrid a bitch as I can be, i've a great deal of compassion in my bones for those who try to kick any habit

Lord knows, i've booted a few into touch in my time. However, don't see this as a pat on the back so you can fall of the wagon without any come back

No, no, no indeed, expect a swift kick (with a size 9 sling-back) in the Niag's maxxi, should I catch you

    • Thank you so much for that link. I had no idea they were there. Also there's a brilliant video on their website about making environmentally friendly gardens, both the hard landscaping materials and the plants used. I learned a lot. Though it was a bit disconcerting hearing someone talk with a fraightfully posh accent  exactly like the late Queen. I will definitely be visiting!

    • Franklins is lovely but it usually only has one veggie option, so if your vegetarian doesn't like it they might  find it hard to find something else. So it might be worth checking out in advance what's on the menu on the night you want to book. Maria's is also lovely, but it's very small. I didn't think they had a table large enough for 8, but reading the above I'm obviously wrong!
