The ongoing road works to the above have brought a welcome rest from the inteminable noise of the passing buses, however I'm a little confused about what work is being done. They dug up to a depth of about 2 foot the top of Cheltenham road and have relaid. They've ignored other sections, and only scrapped the surface off the bottom section.. What is really worrying is the start of Ivydale the've dug up again about 2 feet, but left the middle (and most damaged section) alone, it now seems they're filling it in to resurface. Since the middle of the road is in a contiuous state of collapse, is this just another example of Southwark doing a botch job on road repairs, or are they afraid that if the dig up the middle, it'll show the water/drains have collapsed?

Hi Noonan,

myself and the other two Peckham Rye ward councillors had meetings with Southwark engineers and contractors on Friday. Cheltenham Rd is not finished, they are going back there to do more works. Apparently they did a survey and areas with damaged substructure are having deep reconstructure (not the whole road as we thought!). Once the initial works are completed, they will be inspected and a snagging list will be drawn up. Any remedial works are to be done at the contractors own cost. The works will come with a one year guarantee, so if you notice problems with what has been done, please let me know. Residents have been contacting us about the work and that's why we called for the meeting. We were told that the works are nowhere near completion and that we are jumping the gun with our concerns.

Thanks for the update, Renata.

"We were told that the works are nowhere near completion and that we are jumping the gun with our concerns."

Conversely, we were told that the works were due for completion by the end of Jan 2012, that's just 7 working days away. If the works are nowhere near completed, does this mean the road closure and consequent bus diversions are expected to stay in place into February (and beyond..)? Also, when the snagging takes place, will we be facing additional disruptions to the buses?

I was visiting some friends on Ivydale yesterday.

I was amazed and shocked that so far 4 months on Cheltenham and Ivydale. With letters placed on windscreens about works taking place that didn't for weeks. Whole thing a fiasco.

If you live on these roads and feel you've been messed around the contract for highway maintenance is up for renewal.

Tell the councillor who's accountable [email protected] what you think of the current contractors FM Conway.

    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
    • Just be careful to know exactly what they cover and the limits. i use Many Pets and Medivet, as I think one of the vets is exceptionally good. Some of the NHV are, but I’ve had a couple I’ve not liked at all.  I need consistency and to feel that they actually care more about the animals than the money.
