fair point.

Let me rephrase that.

In order to view a docx you would require word 2010 with its lack of backward compatability and its useless and functionally opaque 'ribbon' thing.

Mind you there's nothing in that document that couldn't be presented in good old fashioned ascii in a txt file.

Microsoft Backward! yes! What a bunch of idiots. Really clever move making all your office product's files incompatible. And who are doing well? Apple - ok they have proprietary formats but at least there is cross product /release compatibility.

Microsoft make a lot of mistakes but then they have a HUGE suite of products.

I'm not a big fan of office 2010, but sometimes if you need to do a leap forward you might need to make a break with the past (though in this case I think they got it very wrong, part of their weird obsession with xml).

On the whole I'm ambivalent about them, they also get a lot, on balance, right (though with something like SQL Server it took them 20 years to get there).

But for all the Evilcorp mud that gets thrown at them, Jobs cut Apple's outreach programs and much oif their charitable activity, and Gates gave away 30 billion dollars, so credit where it's due.

And the only other thing I have to say is iTunes *shudders*

    • Interesting, because I've been going throughout the past few years with different sets of kids and the parents i'm with have always said it's cold. Also spoke to a couple in passing the past weekend and one even said that's why she never brings her 18 month old because it's too cold. Thanks for your feedback. Maybe it's the room temperature that's throwing me off. But the showers are way definitely way warmer than the pool itself.
    • Twice this month I’ve used the PO upstairs at the old WH Smith’s in Forest Hill. Very helpful and efficient with no long wait. But it’s sods law with post office queues, you just never know.
    • I took an item for tracking to Los Angeles having paid postage and customs fee already online to Family Stores in Upland Road. They printed label and custom form from a QR code and all good, present has arrived, and there was no queue. ETA Actually the main reason I posted this is to reassure those who are put off sending gifts to the US because of all the tariff business, like I was, that it is very straightforward
