Dear All, last year (just after the riots) I put in an application for a Southwark 'small grants' called 'Cleaner Green Safer' to improve the entrance to the Choumert Grove car park (by doing some planting to the central and side beds in front of the recycling bins). The idea is to work with young people in the Borough on a small joint project to increase sense of 'ownership' and pride in the area, and of course to improve the overall look of the car park for passers by to and from the station and users of the car park.

Southwark ran out of funding last year... but a few weeks ago they contacted me to say that I could reapply as there were funds available.

I really value the opinions of others, so your vies would be much appreciated.

some of the additional benefits would be as follows:-

Improve environment bordering conservation area and proposed extension of conservation area towards Rye Lane

Reduction of use of chemicals - currently Southwak are spraying to keep weeds down

Screen off useful recycling area to decrease visual impact to street side view

Create a haven for pollenating insects

There are also studies that show that greening urban environments helps reduce anti-social behaviour

I guess if you think it is a bad idea than I better ask for your views too!!! and take it on the nose!!!

Spring is coming

thanks

xx Charlie Charlie

see a very rough idea attached!!!

file.php?20,file=45358

I think it may be helpful to draw a sketch showing how the new scheme would look in the space available and plotting where the plants/bee thingies, etc would go.

There was a thread about the space above Sainsbury's which had something similar (can't remember what the thread was called). It doesn't need to be as professional but it would help non-imaginative people such as myself visualise what you intended to do.

have got a more detailed proposal but the file is too big to attach, could email you the info Peckhamgatecrasher, if you PM me your email address. Have done a rough planting scheme and a proper costing and all, but not suitable for open forum (i.e. sketch is not up to my exacting standards to publish it!!!!)

absolutely brilliant CC (tu)

anything that encourages the natural world to the urban environment is a positive step.

this project will encourage people to work with each other and help towards a sense of 'belonging' in the local community. A good way to meet your neighbours and promote a safer city as well as learning for adults/children e.g. about growing plants. Greening cities not just about human recreation/use, important also for birds, animals and plants too.

Good luck x

Edited: thanks maxxi :))

You mean like Aching Azaleas and Bilious Bindweed - not to mention the Whingeing Willow and Bickering Buttercup...

Good work CC - anything in the 'wildflower' category gets my vote.

Hi Charlie

The link you put on the community garden thread really inspired me, as you do, inspire me. I will only repeat what everyone else has already said. Any green areas, especially in a built up urban area, are always welcome. Wild flowers, which encourage bees, butterflies and insects, will encourage sustainability, therefore, cleaner, greener and a safer environment.

Watching the programme, and the case studies from Liverpool and Birmingham, who highlighted that anti-social behaviour had decreased, has shown, the proof is in the making of the pudding. I know it will all go well for you.

Good luck sweet :)-D

    • I’m not sure how many other people have experienced this; but both me and one of my friends have the same story. Around Crawthew Grove and Crystal Palace Road: I was followed by a large fox right on my heel. At first I didn’t notice because I had my headphones on, but then I noticed my shadow had an extra lump in it, funnily enough, it was a fox, very very close to my feet. Even if I sped up walking it just tried to get closer - it was quite frightening actually, it was quite clear that it wanted to nip me. I didn’t know what to do so, I started to reprimand the fox and walked slowly away from it, facing it - which it didn’t seem to like and backed off a bit. I then proceeded to speed-walk away.   Quite frankly, the whole situation was quite embarrassing and a little bit frightful as I’d never had a fox even come up to me. I’ve heard of particularly curious foxes that might come up to someone who beckons them, and maybe even bite that person, but I’ve never heard of a fox chasing someone. The amount of confidence that it had was incredible.    When it happened, I was on the way to see some friends, and once I had told one of them, she told me the same thing happened to her.  if anyone else knows anything about this bitey fox then let me know!
    • Another recommendation for Andy. I needed an old kitchen removed as an emergency. Andy came over quickly and did a fantastic job. I have used Andy a few times. He is punctual, helpful and always does an  excellent job.
