New car ideas......

Well, used car anyway.........

Basically I have ?6k to spend, want a family car, diesel, also automatic as I am fed up of burned out clutches. I am thinking Peugeot 407 personally but has anyone any ideas, tips, advice?

The 407 came mid-table in the JD Power survey, so maybe not as bad as nette suggests.

VW/Honda/Volvo do well, but I'm not sure if you'll get one with reasonable mileage for 6K.

If you're willing to look at a slightly smaller car, I think the Skoda Octavia is alright.

I had a Peugeot that was an automatic that developed quite a serious fault - when you accelerated and then took your foot off, the car continued to accelerate on its own!

Apply the K.I.S.S principle (keep it simple stupid)

I mean it's great when your (french) car arrives, complete with bollock scratcher and electric pile warmer. However, when these go wrong and it shorts-out the whole car system on the motorway, you kind of get over the idea.

Go german and scratch/heat your respective areas manually.

I'd go German - a Passat with 50k on the clock (there's a good showroom in Norwood I think) or a slightly older Audi estate which you can pick up for 6k.

Hmmm a Passatt is tempting qand I can def get a 45k mileage one for around that price!

I?d go for a Mazda 6. Very good quality and you?ll get a lower mileage car with a few more bells and whistles on it for your 6K than you will if you go for a Volvo, Honda or VW.

Catalytic Convertor on the Mazda 6 is around 2k. Not many available from salvage

Honda's are nice but go for good money

Volvo's are essentially Fords & VW's seem to hold their own

Yes, Peugeot do look nice as do Renaults but that soon wanes as you sit cursing the fucking thing on the hard shoulder

Jeremy's right the Skoda Octavia is a good option.

I'm er, helping someone choose a car to replace their Ford Ranger which had the cat converter nicked as they're easy to get underneath, cost ?500 to fix damage alone and the thieving bastards will easily return once its replaced.

So the VW Passat and Skoda Octavia are front runners so far, relatively economical to run and repair. Have seen a few VWs with lowish mileage for your budget. Good luck.

Ha Ha! I drive a T Reg Meganne at the moment, so certainly not. Just want something that I can fit the family in and have a bit of spare room in the boot for pushchairs and luggage. Reliability is key but I am not sure that Annette is not just a francophile and is pulling my pluunger!
