Good luck to Iceland - cheapish prices and very friendly staff that seem to enjoy working there. They've been told it will probably be September when they'll go that's if they don't win the planning decision.Don't worry indebted newbies you will get your middle class ghetto - piece by piece as no ordinary folk can afford to live here anymore.

I really don't understand how people can not understand that the importance of the application is not whether it is an M&S, a waitrose or a bloomin' McDs it's the application in itself to significantly change the overall size of the building and the implications/impact such development will have on the surrounding areas - residents!

I'd be extremely concerned if the application was approved simply on the basis of the type of company was applying for it!

davidh,

How does informed objection to the detail of a planning application make kk a 'flat-earther'? As underlined by kk, the objection is not to M&S per se but to the total planning application and the impact this will have on those living closest to it.

What's your evidence for this?

Carried out a referendum, have you?

Get's my vote too. If you don't want shops and are worried about parking spaces, then don't live near Lordship Lane. It's quite simple. Same as those people who buy a house near a pub and then complain about noise and people drinking.

Yes, but suppose some planners come along with a proposal not only to change the brewery but to enlarge the footprint of that pub and build 8 new flats on top of it and extend the licensing hours so that it can now open into the early hours.

Those living close to the pub are understandably concerned, but those further away can only focus on the fact that the new bewery will be selling guzzlegut5x and some of their other fave beers. Do you see the difference?

Today, I spoken with one of the Iceland management and heard some interesting news.

Apparently, Iceland has taken out an injunction because they felt they offered a fair price for their lease but M&S has offered a further 10% on top of theirs. Iceland was due to close down in June but because of the court case they will be open until September at least. It seems Iceland is battling to stay as the store is still making money. Iceland have no plans to enlarge their store because a similar proposal was turned down quite some time ago.

DavidH has mentioned the term flatliners implying that M&S is progress. But for some people like my good self, M&S represents a backward step in terms of quality and taste. Everything is relative I suppose! Mind the gap.

    • You're taking everything on this thread  personally DKHB.
    • You are probably right that bluebottles spread disease from the excrement. I will Google it. I suppose the consequences depend on  what disease the excrement may have, where the bluebottles go next, and how and to what or whom the disease may be spread. I didn't say the bluebottles weren't spreading disease. I said they were eating the excrement. It's an important part of nature keeping things in  equilibrium, otherwise the earth would be covered in shit. I don't see bluebottles  around  anywhere else, except on dog mess, so I don't know where they could be spreading disease to, but that doesn't mean they aren't. You may well be right, again, about a few people feeding foxes, but how do you know people are feeding these things you mention  to foxes? Have you seen them doing it? Again, I'm not saying they aren't, but I've never seen anybody feed a fox, nor to the best of my knowledge do I know anybody who feeds foxes. Yes, obviously "urban" foxes were not here before humans, for obvious reasons. But foxes would have been,  when it was woods and countryside, before London expanded.  They have just as much right to be here as us. More, probably. And it's a forum. For discussion. If people agreed on everything or didn't ask for more information, there would be no forum. Why shouldn't I question what you and others say? I was taught to question things. Unquestioning acceptance has led - and is still leading - to a lot of evil and misery. If everyone just accepted everything they read or heard, as you seem to be telling me to, the world would be in a worse mess than it already is. There's a massive amount of false information being put around on social media and elsewhere, a lot of it deliberately. I'm not saying yours comes into that category. If memory serves, you also  have quite a track record, but it's  of posting statements on this forum which you can't back up, and it isn't just me who questions them. Apologies to everyone else for the long post. Back to foxes!
    • Yeah, seen cormorants in the pond at Peckham Rye and Dulwich Park, there are lots around.
    • They've got strong immune systems allowing them to eat a variety of food in a variety of conditions.  I expect most have various parasites.  There again the neighbour's cat seems to have fleas.  We get as much, maybe even more, cat poo in the garden.
