Six of one really. There's a lag in the other direction too, especially as android phiones are by far the majority of smartphones and java is much more widely known than objective-c. PLus I don't think there are any killer apps that either have exclusively. Photosynth is exclusive to iOS, but occiptal 360 is on both. iCloud isn't a killer as fropbox is available on both. For hipstamatic see instagram and pixlr-o-matic etc etc.

I'd say you're asking the wrong question, if you're going smartphone route then then main things to consider, which should point you towards a phone rather than an OS. The order will vary according to everyone's priorities

1) Interface (for me this is everything. get any of it wrong it the little irks will end up grinding you down. I had an old samsung (pre samrt phones) that made me want to garotte passers by every time I used it it was so awful

2) Battery life. Let's face it, all smart phones are pretty bad. iPhone has improved but used to be woeful. My Galaxy S2 is ok, but for the most part they're all plug in every night, the question is will it even last the day. Check out user reviews, manufacturers technical specs aren't worth the paper in my experience. I have read that the new nokia (windows mobile is it happens) is very good in this respect.

3)Camera. Ok so granted most of the instagram type things try to lo-fi the quality and then crucify the quality when compressing for upload. But I do take alot of pics with my phone when I don't have proper cameras and it's nice to have the option to use it as a camera. again the S2 is excellent quality, the video too. Sony Ericssons excel here, iPhones are pretty rubbish to be fair though rumours are that the 5 will finally have something that competes on that front.

4)Entertainment - I can't really comment on this much as i prefer dedicated gadgets for music, reading, video etc as I'm loathe to use that precious battery life, but again check out the individual phones, go to shops and get hands on is my advice. But again I don't think the OS is that important unless you're so very very keen on iTunes.

I have Xperia arc, and like it a lot. There is a newer version since I got mine, but battery life is relatively okay (charge it every night, but it's never died on me), and camera is very good.

Not used an iPhone, so can't compare, but Android has certainly been good enough for me. I'm not particularly big on apps though.

    • I mean this is definitely true - but it rather overlooks the endless angry energy that comes from the right - and not even the far right. Just pick up any issue of Telegraph or Spectator. Or have a look at Priti Patel discussing starving the Irish when Brexit negotiations weren't going well for them. Or some far right idiot killing Jo Cox. Or newspaper articles talking about the need to "kill Corbyn" https://www.medialens.org/2016/killing-corbyn/   left vs right aside for a moment - one thing I already know but this thread proves - you have to be some kind of either lunatic or legend to want to become a councillor. The amount of vitriol (again, from all sides to all sides - but primarily just from average voters) makes it an impossible task for negligible reward or even achievement
    • I'd say the far left had pretty good reasons to be angry, but that discussion is one for the lounge.
    • But we have to remember the jumper incident is actually a badge of honour for those on the left and the person he overthrew actually liked that Christmas post! Cllr McAsh has already had more than his fair share of run-ins with the right-wing press after he got a lot of coverage in the Mail after he called on people on social media to intercept an immigration raid in Peckham. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10908569/ringleaders-Peckham-mob-forced-border-cops-release-suspect-include-Marxist-teacher.html I did feel sorry for him for that Mail article as it is an awful rag but, again, in some circles probably considered a badge of honour.
