Dulwich Born And Bred
Apparently anyone could go in any shops on NXR and vote but I didn?t even know about it until I stumbled on it by chance online.Sue Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> DulwichBorn&Bred Wrote:> --------------------------------------------------> -----> > That design was voted> >> for.....https://www.instagram.com/p/B3hZX7sHPw3/?i> > > gshid=1utzs35pc5ts8> > Not my kind of thing either but at least it?s> > bright. kford
Just saw it. It's terrible - looks like some try-hard community mural from the '80s. Further proof that asking the public to vote on stuff never works. I'd sooner have the plain wall. You cannot beat brick. If the wrong type of paint has been used then there is a real danger that the wall will become porous resulting in a serious internal damp problem, The cost to rectify such a problem will be high. I believe this is what occurred with the 'Bee' Mural next to The Plough Foxy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/241139-mural-in-north-cross-road/page/3/#findComment-1382886 Share on other sites
first mate
Slightly surprised Nx shops and shoppers would vote this in. If it had been some sort of signage it would make a bit more sense. It features really bright primary colours and, I think, it looks dreary in our cold, winter light. I wonder if the shop owners like it? nxjen
I think it?s the shop owners who are behind it. It now has a strap line ?North Cross Road, colourful shops? Hmmm, bit disappointed it?s just a huge advert. Don?t have any views on the artistic content but I wondered if they got planning permission? nxjen
Just because it?s council funded doesn?t mean planning rules can be bypassed although Southwark have a relaxed attitude about murals which I guess is a good thing. The four versions of the mural which were voted on did not include the lettering. DulwichFox
What amazes me is that many people associate East Dulwich as a 'Posh' area. In certain 'Posh' Conservation areas people get Fined for painting their street door the 'Wrong' colour. or fitting the wrong type of windows. .. and yet here in 'Posh' old East Dulwich anyone can paint 'Garish' murals anywhere they feel fit. maxxi
Reminds me of the murals you used to see by the lifts in tower blocks during the 70s. Makes me feel quite nostalgic. Once it stinks of pee and is covered in low-level spray-paint-tagging it'll be complete. LoulaRose
I agree that it does appear to be a huge advert for the shops on North Cross Road and can?t help but feel that the cost should have been covered from their own (combined) marketing budgets rather than southwark?s limited funding. I understand the mural may act to attract consumers to ED, but then shouldn?t it read ?East Dulwich, colourful businesses?? edcam
How big do you imagine the "marketing budget" of tiny local businesses like this is? I haven't seen the mural but regardless of its merits (or lack thereof), this is one of the most curmudgeonly threads on the forum for some time.LoulaRose Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> I agree that it does appear to be a huge advert> for the shops on North Cross Road and can?t help> but feel that the cost should have been covered> from their own (combined) marketing budgets rather> than southwark?s limited funding. civilservant
it's ok - it's not great art but not objectionable either it's all spelled correctly and it certainly brightens up that cornerwhat did you expect to get on a council budget?
