Hi,

I am looking to buy a laptop/notebook for my niece who's recently been diagnosed with a serious illness (on her 11th birthday, bless) which means she'll be having to have lots of bed rest over the coming months.

She's a really active kid, so it's gojng to be really tough on her, so we're looking at ways of relieving the tedium.

I'd like to get her a reasonably priced laptop type thing that doesn't need to be super high spec, will need a decent battery life, as she's likely to be in hosp and not able to plug into mains (parents will have to take home and recharge overnight), can play music and DVDs and doesn't cost a fortune, (but isn't rubbish...it will get a fair amount of use in the long term from herself and her two siblings).

Am open as to the screen size..am thinking probably a smaller one is better...

I'm hoping to get away with under ?300. Is this doable? Can anyone recommend something?

Cheers

Hello The best deals are on machines with 15-16" screens, still small enough to carry around, with the smaller screens the keyboards suffer through lack of space, even for small hands. mid size you're looking at 3hrs battery life double that on a 12", most of the mainstream makes are much of muchness and compete to grab your cash!!

A quick search on Amazon found this, good specifications for the price. I would buy this myself !!

Sorry to hear about your neice - I hope she makes a good and speedy recovery.

I can't advise much about computers but hospital beds tend to have a few plug points near and, although they may not always be available the instant she needs them, charging shouldn't generally be a problem.

    • I personally think is a great idea Bobbly and would love if there was a section for it. I wouldn't offer free gardening under the "for sale" section as I would expect something in exchange and wouldn't expect our cat being looked after for free under the "wanted" section, as an example.

    • I have fond memories of Govinda's I used to go there  back in the 90's (maybe earlier) for an affordable tasty lunch..I was wondering if its still around. Now I have to make a point of going there. Does anyone else remember a really affordable basement cafe run by the church in a street off of Golden Square? parallel to Regent Street? I also used to love the Vegetarian cafe on Neal Street in the basement (Neal Street Cafe?) and there was an inczredible inexpensive authentic Japanese resturant I use to go to with my Japanese friends (who introduced me to it) tucked away behind Long Acre where that brown brick modern building ('modern' I think it went up in the 90's!) now stands that fronts Long Acre and Neal Street..I think it was called Asakasa or something?
    • I wonder where he could be deported to, Hungary the obvious candidate in Europe, perhaps he would get on well with Modi?   Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage both said Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood should look at whether Abd El Fattah's citizenship could be revoked to enable his swift removal from the UK. Farage said in a letter to Mahmood: "It should go without saying that anyone who possesses racist and anti-British views such as those of [Mr Abd El Fattah] should not be allowed into the UK." So just racists views are ok Nige?
