Pubs and restaurants to close?

It's this "don't bother me" mentality that will give the virus that little edge it needs to rip through the population.

Imagine, a species so intelligent it can figure out what the disease is and how to avoid it, yet so stupid it ignores advice from scientists about preventing the spread.

Another example (besides Brexit) why freedom of choice causes great harm to a population, if allowed in the wrong population !!

The problem is that the hospitality trade is hanging on by its fingernails. If they do not open, they cannot pay their staff. These staff need this money to live.

I guarantee that most hospitality based businesses do not have enough in the bank to pay the wage bill for more than 2 weeks - so there is the conundrum. They are reluctant take out the govt backed loans as they will not really be able to carry these going forward (anecdotally heard of someone who applied for one and the interest rates was 18% - maybe the new rate had not been noted) but there is the conundrum. Businesses WANT to support their staff but do not have the means to do so - esp after the lean months on jan/feb/march. Alot are waiting for the spring/summer surge of weddings and parties to refill the coffers. The economics of fear will rule.

That might be the Mutual Aid Volunteers handing out flyers for the other volunteers to post within the GG Ward. The group is kept very small.

I agree but it's also really good that people are heeding the advice. To use that annoying phrase it's short term pain for long term gain. have no idea how big "long" or "short" are but they're relative, a smaller short means a smaller long.

Why do you say it's really bad?

Do you think people should be ignoring government advice and going to these places?

Yes it's terrible for the businesses and those who work there, but that's a separate issue which let's hope the government will properly address.

I thought you were ill, DF. Do you think it's sensible to be wandering around East Dulwich when presumably you are at high risk of getting this virus badly if you catch it?

Why do you say its really bad. ?? #FFS

People should NOT be going to these places. The Corona Virus situation is whats bad .

I need to get out of the house and exercise and get some fresh air.

Why do you always take things people post here the wrong way.

I went for a Brain scan today. It was orig. cancelled but my situation is so serious

that they were forced to see me. Corona Virus is the least of my concerns at the moment.

The Hospital agreed my situation is serious and a possible brain tumour would be life threatening.

Also having High blood pressure. Asthma and Problems with my Pancreas and possible liver.

Also loosing my eye sight due to Vit b12 deficiency, I have been on a course of injections.

You thought I was Ill. Yes I am. Seriously ill. I have virtually stopped drinking alcohol.

But now I can't even go to the pub, have a chat and a couple of alcohol Free beers.

#FFS I do not see or speak to anyone day in day out. I was looking forward to seeing my Doctor tomorrow

but it's been cancelled and a Telephone appointment is to be be arranged.

I'm sorry you have been unwell and hope you are feeling better. Just give me a break

Correct. That would be us. We have small "gatherings" every 2pm & 7pm. I'm taking the 2pm shifts, sitting inside with a stack of flyers & hand writing my number on every one of them. A volunteer will occassionally come in to drop off or pick up. We're limiting contact with eachother, constantly washing hands & have hand sanitizers.

DF

Everyone's in the same boat as you but some are working harder to bail it out to stop it sinking than others. I sympathise with your issues but if everyone does what's best for the greater good then we'll be better sooner.

Someone on twitter said we should all have a virtual drink at 7:00 PM tonight (well a real drink virtually I meant).

it's not the same and I miss the pub - but it's nice to know a load of other people are having a drink simultaneously.

He is completely irresponsible and why Sky News are giving him airtime to share those views is baffling. He seems to think his booze sales are more important than lives, claiming 'there has been very little transmission of the virus in pub'. How on earth does he know? It is that kind of ignorance that will increase the death toll.

In reality the most dangerous place to 'Catch' The Corona Virus is Sainsburys early morning.

The Time when the Elderly and most Vulnerable are being invited to go along.

The time when most people are about in the store.

People must be a greater risk there than sitting alone in the corner of the pub or Cafe.

Unfortunately, I didn't think just because we can see a location/event which may be higher risk in theory, it automatically means a free-for-all everywhere else.

Minimising contact wherever possible will help save lives.

Everywhere that is non-essential should close to support this.

    • Hi  I have a spare old wheelbarrow that you could have for free. You’d need to come and collect it from Telegraph Hill, so drop me a message if you’re still looking and we can arrange a time best wishes carrie
    • This is quite a serious allegation. What evidence is there of this? Pressured how and by whom? This is quite a spin on ‘it’s been agreed with the emergency services’. They think the vehicles pictured driving through with partially covered plates are the result of ‘poor signage’ 🤔  If it is as they say ‘small numbers’ driving through the square, that doesn’t suggest that the signage is unclear. I mean who honestly believes it’s possible to drive through there without noticing the signs / planters (assuming you’re driving with due care and attention)?! 🤨  Also, haven’t ‘One’ opposed any improvements to the layout / landscaping and signage proposed by Southwark? It’s all a bit desperate. At the height of the LTN ‘controversy’ a number of co-ordinated ‘One’ groups popped up across London. It doesn’t feel like a local grassroots movement, but has all the hallmarks of astroturfing. The lack of transparency about it’s funding / sponsorship and structure does not help with this impression.
