Look I accept it's not going to happen at the Castle but I'm getting a bit irate at people's prejudices. Every single drinks so far someone says a pub and I've gone along. Do I like the pubs we go to ? Not always... But if people choose the Vale I'll go along to that one. TO argue that it's not the surroundings that matter but the people and company is exactly MY point as well.

People are resistant to visiting what they consider a dodgy pub - so how exactly is it "peculiar" to suggest that people push those boundaries?? I'm going to say it again - unless you have a personal beef with the place, and if you are not going to go because you consider it unsafe or dodgy then I'm really not bothered if it's a forum regular or a first-timer - you are a snob

Of course people are nervous coming along to meet a strange bunch of people for the first time - most of us have been through it and I certainly haven't forgotten my first time. But if we did go to the Castle (and we're not, we're definitely NOT) then many of the regulars in the Castle (who to my knowledge aren't forum regulars) will be exposed to the forum and broaden the demographic further. I see this as a good thing. Given the average 2-5 first-timers who come along each new forum drinks.. let's say that reduces to zero because of the "fear" perpetuated on here about the Castle... That would be a shame but I would count on gaining at least the same from the existing regulars

Right now, precisely 15 mins after Arsenal's glorious victory at the San Siro I feel like going for a pint. In the Castle....

If anyone fancies a pint at the Castle in addition to the official EDF drinks night I'd be happy to join them. I haven't tried the Castle yet but I am partial to a good Guinness and if its anything like the Railway in Catford then I wont be disappointed.

So who's up for it?

I have gone to watch many a Champions League game when they were ONDigital at the Castle - Haven't been to see football there for a while but I suspect they will (that said, Shaktar Donetsk v Arsenal on a cold winter's night, I seem to recall being the ONLY person watching the game)

Cause and Effect surely.....

    • thanks Jenijenjen and all - yes, i remember walking or taking the bus from the elephant (where i was working) to Camberwell to get there.  I think Tim - who's still at Franklin's -  was there in those days, and the woman who ran the cafe!  Other food places that i remember fondly are the ones in Neal's Yard (with the Hunkin sculpture that you could put a coin in ) and the basement lunch place at the Tottenham Court Road junction with Hanway Street...
    • Did you try the emergency number posted above? It mentions lift breakdowns over the festive period outside the advertised  times. Hope you got it sorted x
    • People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.
