This is a great idea. The previous ?rules? about low footfall in the week don?t stand with hugely increased home working. More frequent markets but with a lower density of stalls could provide better social distancing. In addition, having variety in the market on different days would encourage more frequent trips
Having grown up in ED from the 1950s- NX Road had a small market during the week - only about 4 or 5 stalls - fruit and veg, haberdashery. fish stall on Fridays - cannot remember the others. It was considered a cheap place to get fruit and veg - as shops were much dearer.

The 'rules' were one of economy. If there is sufficient custom/ demand, the market may be able to extend its opening times - but you cannot force suppliers to supply where they don't want to; where demand is insufficient. We may have a new normal where street markets are more compelling - although working from home may not be sufficient to drive demand.

Exactly - markets are driven by their economies - the current NX market is anything but cheap - it is high-end specialist - nothing wrong with that but it can't be compared with other more traditional markets - which were either 'good value' or catered to specialist (regional) dietary needs, or both.

absolutely.

And why market stalls only there, why not a couple back at the old market place on Underhill Rd !?

I hear that was Fridays and Saturdays.

I guess that's the point isn't it - rather than enlarging the market on Saturdays - enlarge it by having stalls over different days, spread out. There is a consensus that outdoors is better in terms of not spreading the virus than indoors, its not inconceivable to think that there could be some kind of screens for vendors, and with fewer stalls on each day it would make social distancing easier. It may also finally get the stall holders to turn round to face the closed off road, leaving the pavements free for pedestrians who need to pass!

You're suggesting that stall-holders will be willing to increase their outgoings and time commitment by the amount of days the market is open for the same financial return as when it?s open for one day.

Edited to add I?ve just had a great idea. Perhaps coffee stalls can be set up in Melbourne Grove when (if) that road closes to through traffic. It can become the new go to destination and take advantage of all that lovely clear space.

No - not at all - you've misunderstood. I'm not suggesting they attend for eg 3 days to get the same income as they previously got in one, I'm suggesting that different stall holders could attend on different days - this way the stalls could be further apart and there would be more reason for people to go there more often as would be different offerings.

Anyone know if NX market will reopen from next weekend? Apparently outdor markets are now permitted to do so from June 1st. https://metro.co.uk/2020/05/25/outdoor-markets-car-dealerships-will-reopen-next-monday-12756280/

I hope so - I've missed the popcorn place and Comfort & Joy these past couple of months.

Popcorn at ?5.00 a bag... ???

Go to the Co-op and buy a bag of Popcorn Kernels.. 500Ggms for 99p.

Enough to make 8 of those bags..

Foxy.

Foxy baby, I think you're missing the point of the popcorn stall.

It's sweet & salty popcorn and I think it'd be difficult to make as good at home.

Hence the stall is there to provide for us !

And (from memory) there are TWO prices, Small (?3.80) and Large (?5) which is the one you've seized on for your example.

Given that you wouldn't even touch this popcorn I don't know why you went for quoting the Large (?5) bag !!

Sometimes for a weekend treat people like to try the popcorn, you can obviously buy popcorn in the corners shops for ?1, but it's pretty dire let's be honest.

If one spend's ones' decisioning time only interested in the cheapest of things, one will only get the lowest quality of things. If that's how you want to exist, fair play, but let the rest of us enjoy life a bit !

So, you buy your kernels from Co-Op and make tasteless popcorn, meanwhile everyone else can get decent gear down the market !

KK.

Ok I chose the ?5.00 bag.. I did not know the price of the small bag..

like I said you could make 8 of the larger bags.

You could Probably make 10 - 12 bags of the smaller size.

Home made Popcorn is Super easy to make.. You can make it according to your needs.

You can add Salt.. Sugar... or Splenda.. Cinnamon .. anything you so wish..

It's fun to experiment...

Get the kids involved...

MY Popcorn is Not tasteless and I know what is in it .. How much Salt, Sugar, Glucose Syrup.

After all many of us are currently stuck at home with a lot of time on our hands..

Foxy

ETA...

You know as good as I, that Had I said how much I loved the Popcorn from the Market..

You would of lectured me on how easy it was to make delicious Popcorn at home.

    • My understanding is the "free event" is 100% Gala, nothing to do with the council. Obviously Gala will still make money from the food & drink that they are trying to coerce punters into buying on their social media posts. Their costs will be negligible due to already having the infrastructure in place for Gala. So Gala are trying to appear community minded by providing this "free event", but the real goal is to set a precedent for a fourth day's festival - which surely no one could possibly object to?!? - in preparation for applying (again) for two three-day festivals spread over two weekends. It's only another two days, right, and the site & equipment is already there, so why would anyone object?!? More money for the council, much more money for Gala, win-win right? But yet another week of our park taken away from us, too, and another 18,000 people trampling & littering the park, and another week of disturbance for the native birds & wildlife...
    • Meson Don Felipe on The Cut was my go to place for many years. Though it's now many years since I was there. 10-15 minute walk from the Tate. If you go can you tell me what it's like nowadays?
    • Doubt you would have got much change out of £150.00 for battery and certainly having forked out for it, best to use your car. I recently sold  my car via webuyanycar.com - very pleasant experience & was roughly what I was expecting. Pop your bangers reg jnto their website to get an idea of price - they do send e mails once a fortnight/month just as an aid for you. Easy enough to delete - don’t even have to read valuation. They literally buy any car - if you can’t get it to them, they will charge you to get it there or recommend a co that will do it for you. Must say, mine was a 2014 reg and whilst a bit suspicious, paid extra to get money into my account as needed it for next car but was assured funds had I not gone down route I took would be in my account within 5 days. I now live in the country - every time I have been back to Dulwich and surrounding area, normally get a fine for driving at wrong time or parking at  wrong time so if I drive now, park in West or East Dulwich and do everything else by public transport and walking.  Were I still to be living in ED then before I left was pondering this very issue but since I have been back regularly for health reason I no longer drive but take the train and then buses, walk or Uber. Much cheaper than running a car and had I stayed, that would have been the course I would have taken. I don’t go out everyday, have an allotment or job to go to or family so in my case, would be cheaper not to have a car.  Was truely shocked   at the cost of second hand cars…..but where I now live only has a smattering of buses so no choice but to have wheels to get from A to B etc.
    • If you don't use the car often then suggest disconnect the battery between use by undoing the earth (negative / minus sign) cable from the battery and the battery will then last longer between use. Remember, central locking, alarm, clock, etc won't work with battery disconnected and wit ours I have to lock the doors with central locking before disconnecting battery as only have key on one door (leave bonnet open before locking doors). Hope this helps
