Whilst I appreciate that some folks might not be the biggest fans of Tessa Jowell, and everyone is entitled to their opinion, the OP started this thread to say thank you. Why does it have to be hijacked to criticise her/debate her politics/performance? If you don't approve, can't you start your own thread, rather than detract from this one? I appreciate a good discussion, but as ever with this forum, certain threads are good for that, and others, well, simply aren't.

Thank you and good luck Tessa.

*ducks and runs for cover*

I like Tessa Jowell.

But as for not voting the wishes of her constituents - even if that's true (and we have no evidence to prove that to be the case), if 51% of my neighbours wanted to bring back hanging, I would hope that my MP would have good sense to tell them to do one.

Exactly RosieH.

We don't govern by plebiscite (referendum) in the UK, but by representative democracy. An MP's role is not to vote according to the wishes of the constituents, but to lay out a manifesto and if elected to deliver on it.

As Edmund Burke might say, a representative should never sacrifice his judgement to the opinion of the constituency.

This is why delivering on manifesto commitments is so important in the UK. If a government fails to deliver on a manifesto pledge then they have committed one of the most egregious sins in modern democracy.

I think Tessa is great and she did an excellent job over the Olympics, right from the very start. Instead of carping, if you think you can do a better job of representing your constituents why don't you stand for election for the Council, get involved and try to make a difference?

Dame Jowell was "run" (I came to realise) by some thuggish party line towers who live locally. They fed her projects ideas names and places while she nodded and signed as directed here and at the cabinet table. The thing is to not hire in another hack again. Hold tight to the pictures of Berlusconi in his little rag cloth hat hiding his hair plugs on holiday with Mr Blair by his side. With his porn parties and underaged girls he hosted Mr Blair many times and his media have only this week published the "topless" photos... another political Murdock jerking politician puppets on strings.

Mr Dealer you started the thread! Have a nasty go if it makes you feel important but you clearly cannot take it, even without nasty personal derogatory comments, the way you dish it out.

    • Unless we don't fly I don't think we can be too critical of the authorities.
    • In 2016 London City Airport began using concentrated flight paths. When there's a predominantly westerly wind, incoming aircraft approach from East London (north of the River). When there's a predominantly Easterly wind, incoming aircraft approach the airport from the West: circling through Forest Hill, Dulwich, Vauxhall, Tower Hamlets, Docklands. This latter flight path affects many of us in South East London. https://www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/what-london-assembly-does/questions-mayor/find-an-answer/london-city-airport-concentrated-flight-paths The planes going into City are often below 2,000 ft, so very noisy. Sometimes we have incoming Heathrow at the same time, flying higher. The early flights that I hear e.g. 04:30 are incoming to Heathrow. They are scheduled to land at 05:30 but are 'early'. Apparently the government allows a percentage of flights to arrive early and late (but these are now established as regular occurrences, informally part of the schedule). IMHO Londoners are getting very poor political representation on this issue. Incredible that if you want to complain about aircraft noise, you're supposed to contact the airport concerned! Preposterous and designed solely in favour of aviation expansion.
    • Yet another recommendation for Jafar. Such a nice guy, really reliable and fair. He fixed a problem with our boiler and then incredibly kindly made two more visits to replace a different part at no extra cost.
    • I didn't have any problems with plane noise until city airport started flying planes to and from about 5-8 minutes apart from 5.30 am or  6 am,  and even with ear plugs and double glazing I am woken at about 6 well before I usually would wake  up. I have lived here since 1986 and it is relatively recently that the planes have been flying far too low over East dulwich. I very much doubt that they are headinbg to Heathrow or from Heathrow. As the crow flies we are much , MUCH closer to City Airport than Heathrow or Gatwick. I even saw one flying so low you could see all the windows, when I was in Peckham Rye Park.
