Come on, your only description of the car or driver prior to you saying you asked to be let out was that it was covered in gay porn. It seems entirely reasonable for readers to conclude that that was what made you uncomfortable. Best man up and admit it; Lord knows I'd be put off by a car decorated in porn of any type.

Why descend to insults, kids? We disagree, big deal. Or are you saying you never pick on someone else's comments?

Indeed. Don't worry KK, I've been around long enough to know how people operate on the forum.

It's irksome to be misinterpreted but I don't feel the need to shout out my homophilic credentials.

Thanks to you, saffron and civilservant for the reasonable vote of support though, appreciated.

Worker, I refer you to my comment of 11:29 "The nature of the porn was incidental to my concern about the situation..."

The problem is nowadays strangers are not necessarily strangers to a child it could be a friend of the parents a teacher or family member which is usually the case. When my daughter was young I would always say to her that if someone approaches her even family and family friends before she goes anywhere with them is to ask them what her favourite teddy bear?s name.

Now she is a teenager if she is in trouble we also have a code word when she is phoning me. All we can do is to try and educate our children the best we can and hope they will take it on board.

Indeed generally those who moan about people being PC have some rather dodgy opinions, as demonstrated above.

Well yes, you did post that after your first post on your ride in the golden Audi, but my post was simply pointing out that it's not an unreasonable conclusion from your first post that you had a problem with the gay porn plastering the inside of this golden Audi. I would have.

Not sure where I've accused you of homophobia or why my post desevess the response it got, but it's easy to misinterpret comments on this forum, eh?

I didn't cut anything out, I just highlighted your lightning analogy to demonstrate that a "better safe than sorry" approach is often best, in various circumstances. Of course you're right, paranoia is helpful to nobody.

Ridgeley, the code word is a very good idea, thanks.

All, why do these things happen? Is it easy access to child porn on the Internet (god I shudder typing that) or more people out in the community who are a danger and should be in a hospital or less of a community "feel" these days? Whatever it is, the cocktail isn't a good one and the most vulnerable are suffering. As a digression, we are focussing on children because that is our age group. The elderly are also suffering more than in the past, again I think owing to the decline of the community. :-(

Is it increasing, or are we simply more aware of it?

Actually, I read some interesting historical statistics. Interpersonal violence has been on a dramatic decline over the past few centuries, and has continued to decline into modern times.

However it has been noted that within this decline there are transient upswings influenced by multiple factors such as economy, politics, etc. This is probably attributable to good people doing bad things in times of duress.

Bad people will probably always try to do bad things, as reflected by the rates of profound mental disorders such as sociopathies being relative unchanged over time.

The issue about children "taking it on board" when parents try to educate them about dangerous individuals (be they strangers or otherwise) is only part of the story. No matter how well you teach your children, no matter how well they understand and attempt to apply these lessons, some truly evil people are very manipulative of children (and adults too!) and can manage to harm others despite our best efforts to educate and protect our children. That's what makes these scenarios so upsetting, IMHO. There is an element of them being out of our control.

Southwark Council Christmas trees recycling arrangements 2025 - bit worrying for the future that they're emphasising the free bit. "We’ll collect and recycle your real Christmas tree for free!  Trees should not be taller than 5ft. You should chop any taller trees into smaller pieces. Remove all decorations and the pot or stand and recycle it by: putting your tree with your garden waste containers on collection day requesting a free collection if you do not have a garden waste collection  taking it to our Reuse and Recycling Centre [43 Devon Street, SE15 1AL open 08:30-16:30 Mon-Sun] If you live in a flat you must leave the tree: outside on the kerb visible for the collection crew not in a bin store" I'll add the link to the collection booking service when it opens on 22 December.
    • Most homes in East Dulwich / Good Green ward have collections on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. So no changes for them this year.  But for those few local homes with collections normally on Thursdays or Friday, with Christmas, Boxing day happening on Thursday and Friday any blue, brown or green bin collections will be delayed by two days. So Thursday 25 December collections will be on Saturday 27 December and Friday 26 December collections on Sunday 28 December. For New Years day those Thursday collections will be on the Friday 2 January and those with normal collections of Fridays that will be on Saturday 3 January.
