I think we've had some unwelcome furry visitors

I seem to remember seeing recommendations for someone local on the EDF before - anyone used anyone local and good?

Could just put down traps but never seem to work for us!

Make sure to check your attic (if you have one) and the basements to fairly assess the extent of your rodent problem. You want to be able to give as much information as possible to your local pest control agent before he/she does their thing!
