HI,

So my little one will be 4 in December and I have been stupidly busy that I have not sorted anything for him ( tut tut)

so I know he wanted to go to the V&A to see Darth Vader Mask but alas no Tickets till Jan ! so what to do?

I was thinking panto? anyone got any ideas? we do soft play regulary so this is not really a birthday treat.

A million thanks in advance

I would really recommend going to one of the theatres designed specifically for children. We're so lucky to have Polka in Wimbledon, the Unicorn at London Bridge and the Half Moon Theatre all accessible to us. These theatre are designed with children in mind - making it a very different experience for them (just think about seats and sightlines in your regular adult theatres from a child's perspective).

And the shows they produce and host are often incredibly thoughtful and very attuned to reaching the age range they are aimed at. I wish my little one at nine months could go and see Oily Cart's Christmas show at the Unicorn. Oily Cart are an amazing company and their work is beautifully designed and hugely imaginative.

Just to second the Polka Theatre. We left ED just over a year ago and we're so lucky to have it on our doorstep now. We're off to see the toddler version of this http://www.polkatheatre.com/whats-on/too-many-penguins in a couple of weeks. As your son is a little older he'd probably be fine at the older performance. I really can't rate the Polka enough.
We are going to see Room on the Broom at the Lyric just before christmas with our two - 3.5 yr old loves the book, aisle seats so me and the 1.5 yr old can escape if necessary! Also thinking about going to see In a Pickle at the unicorn if can get in - seems quite booked up.

Just wanted to say a huge thanks for this post. The day I saw it, my son had seen the older children at his pre school perform a play and was totally captivated which made me want to take him to see some christmas shows. He had also loved seeing Hairy Maclary this summer.

Anyhow, we are just back from seeing Stickman at the Leicester square theatre www.scamptheatre.com

It was just brilliant. My son is 2 1/2 so was worried that he may be too young but he knows the book so well and it was perfect. Lots of audience interaction and a few things aimed at the adults too. The theatre was about 1/3 full so I expect there are lots of weekday tickets still available. they provide bouncy cushions for the younger ones.

I left my 9 month at home but there were lots of younger siblings there.

Am now booking up lots of the other shows mentioned above.

thanks again for the ideas!

Room on the Broom is on in town, or you could stay local and go to Newspaper Boy & Origami Girl on at Theatre Peckham? I'm going to see 'Going on a Bear Hunt' at Pleasance Theatre in Islington in late December, one of my 2 yr old's fave books so hopefully should be fun :) Peppa Pig and other events on in Dec and Jan. Have a look on East Dulwich Mummy website too, some other productions listed on there...

    • I've used just about all the locally available supermarkets for deliveries over the years, and I now  use Waitrose for deliveries, for various reasons. They have a good range of the things I eat, their food is good quality and their "essentials" range is generally good value (except the tissues, which suddenly became so thin as to disintegrate immediately. I was mainly buying them for the nice plain boxes, so now I just put other tissues into the old Waitrose boxes 🤣) It is very rare for something I've ordered to not be available on the day. Their delivery drivers  are genuinely friendly and helpful. Their customer service is very good. On the rare occasions I've had issues, they have refunded me without quibbling. They often have special deals on some of the things I buy often, so I stock up when they are cheaper. I do occasionally compare prices with other supermarkets, and overall I really don't think Waitrose is more expensive, but obviously they might be for things I don't personally buy. I absolutely hate Sainsbury's, would use Lidl for some things but they don't deliver, Iceland has a very small range of things I eat, and I can't remember why I don't use Tesco or Asda any more. I recently checked out Ocado because there was some offer which seemed good value, but they just didn't have enough things I wanted to buy to make it worth using the offer. M&S don't deliver ( to the best of my knowledge) but in any case they seem to be still badly suffering from the recent hack into their system. Apologies, I have just remembered this thread is about shopping at actual physical stores, but probably many of the issues are the same.
    • Since I am of a certain vintage now, not sure if what I am going to suggest is even still around but here goes… use to be able to buy “dummy/mock papers on line and also had mini synopsis of Shakespeare plays specifically covering students wanting to gain a better understanding of play before taking mocks/ exams. Only know this as many many moons ago, struggled with English Literature and Language and this was the avenue-my parents went down. Also was at this point in my life, educated abroad as part of my fathers job.
    • Love your comment about “shoehorned” - put a smile on my face..! As for comment about “Little Waitrose” ummmm - never really thought about it. Personally, could not care less. But guess Sainsbury Local and Tesco Express are to you more acceptable.. Ultimately, when I think about it, I actually don’t care what they call themselves - been lured by partially branding and partially convenience and what they offer in groceries.
