Beer/pub/drinking/East Dulwich thread - Gowlett

Recommended Posts

couldn't really think of any where to put this so why not start a new thread

went in the Gowlett on Saturday - great beer but my word, if they were looking for a way to replic8 the DSS-waiting room atmosphere of the Rye Lane McDonald's then they more than achieved it

There is nothing wrong with being a Millwall season ticket holder.

There is something distinctly wrong with referring to oneself in the third person.

I like in there and I remember it when it was a real shithole. Full of thugs. In fact an old friend of mine ran it for a while back in those days. It was fecking horrible then. It's got a fine selection of ales, great pizza, a pool table, friendly bar staff and the music is often very good. Do they still do Lucky Sevens on Thursday nights?

I was about to ask the same question!

I even borrowed some of my sister's old 45s, but then I never went back. The only time I did it, some f-er played one of the ones I'd taken down, and I didn't have anything else with me, so I had to play it again :( My Girl, Otis Redding, I think it was :))

I like it there for beers pizza pool, been challenged there though on 2x different occasions.

Once by some big, grey-haired wine-drinking tit who couldn't back it up.

Another by some chav shaven-headed tradesman - that time I got a cab home sharpish !

Still go though, pizza too good to avoid.

Yep, Lucky 7s very much alive and kicking. And Sue, my tip is always to take along a couple of spares for just such a happening. In fact I usually take a few, in case the mood of the night feels different from what I'd planned to play.

And Otta, really, in the Gowlett? I remember a Saturday in the CPT when my companion was threatened by a coked up wanker who claimed to have a knife for erroneously identifying the football hat on his child's head.

    • People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.
    • Adapted not forced.  As have numerous species around the world.  Sort of thing that Attenborough features.  Domestic dogs another good example - hung around communities for food and then we become the leader of the pack.  Not sure how long it will take foxes to domesticate, but some will be well on their way.    Raccoons also on the way https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1j8j48e5z2o
    • My memory, admittedly not very reliable these days, places the shop on the block on the left hand side just before Burgess Park going towards Camberwell. Have also found a reference to Franklins Antiques being located at 157 Camberwell Road which is on that block. This is a screen shot obtained from Google maps of that address which accords with my memory except the entrance door was on the right hand side, where the grey door is, rather than in the centre.
    • The MFI was probably where Iceland is now. This post makes me feel very old - went to a 30th birthday party in the garden at the back. Oh to be 30 again!
