Help-Ma-Boab
Something similar was talked about a little while ago. You might find some of the links helpful in the thread:http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,861651,861651#msg-861651 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27702-local-skills-swop-scheme/#findComment-604941 Share on other sites
ed neighbour
Thanis for this, Help-Ma-Boab - so, mixed feelings! I'd looked at the schemes recommended already, but they don't seem very active in this area - any other views on this, or thoughts about how it could work as a simple system? japseylarue
There's the LETS scheme. Look at www.letslink.net/london Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27702-local-skills-swop-scheme/#findComment-604962 Share on other sites
Jacqui5254
I would be happy with a 'babysitting in return for putting up some shelves'/'cooking a dinner party for a lift and back to Heathrow' level of swopping. Small jobs can sometimes be the hardest to sort out if you don't have the skills [ie, I know where to find a plumber, or a builder, but if I just need help with putting up some pictures, [just moved house so have several rooms-full], then maybe you would like my coq au vin..? bodsier
I really like the idea, and used to be involved in the 'brights' scheme when i lived in brighton. What i found as a therapist is that everyone wants a treatment, but my needs such as diy were harder to receive and i was therefore always in credit and couldn't spend my brights. In my opinion, better to do the swaps same day if possible (obviously that is not always possible). I am interested though if it could be carried out like that. JMT
I'm trying to organise one for Telegraph Hill. Maybe we could join forces, or at least discuss how it can work. ed neighbour
Thanks JMT - that sounds interesting. I have PM'd you! I think that the idea has both problems and possibilities associated with it = anyone else with any personal experience of being a member of such a scheme, or who would possibly be interested in joining? Dame Dulwich
I think this is a wonderful idea. Not simply for the benefit in getting a good deal, but more for the friendships it may form of those living in Dulwich. Although ED is a nice area to live in, I find it lacking in free, friendly communication. PeckhamRose
I love this idea also. I have few skills but could be useful but as a household we have loads of skills we could swap!Let's face it, red wine only goes so far as a currency here!We (individually or as a collective?) would have to think of things like liability (should someone walk into someone's house and accidentally damage themselves or someone or something in the house), and so on. Or just agree to be sensible and take responsibility!Should we start a new section on the forum? ed neighbour
Hi Peckham Rose, and others -Thanks for your enthusiasm!I agree with you that there are lots of possibilities that would benefit many in the community, as well as spreading the community spirit itself - but also issues / difficulties to be considered - Hence call for anyone with experience in this area to get in touch, please. If admin would consider a separate section, in principle at least, it would be great to hear from you too - but I think that the various issues need careful consideration first.Do get in touch if you feel you can help / advise - thanks all! Alec John Moore
HiYou could have a look at streetbank:http://www.streetbank.com/splashIt can do the Freegle/Freecycle thing as well as loaning equipment and skills swap. I'd love to see it take off but, like all online forums, it needs a critical mass of active members to make it really work. Just like EDF, really.Alec Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27702-local-skills-swop-scheme/#findComment-605192 Share on other sites
tracymcdavis
I'd be interested, I think I have skills that would be useful to others and could certainly benefit from the experience of others - and it would be nice to meet more people in the area as I've only lived in ED for 6 months (I didn't move from Clapham!). JRS
I am also interested and would love to get involved. Can cook, count and solve business problems. Petrified of not finishing DIY projects, so they don't get started. Clive_P
This all sounds great and is a bit like a Timebank. There is already a project that helps facilitate this called Hourbank which is based in Peckham but works accross Southwarkhttp://www.pecan.org.uk/our-projects/hourbank Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/27702-local-skills-swop-scheme/#findComment-605298 Share on other sites
Sue
In theory this is an absolutely brilliant idea.In practice there are all sorts of potential drawbacks, as discussed on the other thread a while ago.Probably better to find an existing scheme like the one Clive_P mentions than try to start another one up.
