Southwark is a very good group for East Dulwich. I have given away lots of things easily and collected stuff. Many of them fairly close to here. It is a great feeling knowing things are going to a new home. I wanted some fabrics for a creche I was running and was given three huge sackfuls! It can get addictive looking to see what is on offer, but great for a spring clear out.

I'm a regular user of this forum to get rid of unwanted stuff. It works a treat. Sometimes, people claim stuff in minutes ? especially packing boxes. But I've also found new homes for typewriters, a cupboard, and a wardrobe plus other things. People are often incredibly grateful and I've been given chocolates and even a bottle of wine for my trouble.

Here are some tips.

- Say in the subject OFFERED FREE: [what it is ]

? make it clear they have to collect it and give a date when you want it gone by.

? ask people to send you a private message (PM you)

? ask them to provide a mobile number when they do. This gives you some reassurance that they trust you, so you can trust them, and that they'll turn up when they say they're going to.

? if you live alone and feel at all unsure about the person coming, get a friend to be there with you.

? remember to change the subject heading by adding TAKEN once the thing's gone. People sometimes contact you weeks afterwards

BeccaL, if they're like the ones I've been to in Oxford, basically everybody takes unwanted stuff to a room (give) and takes what they want to from the room (take).

In Oxford they weigh stuff as you leave, then total it all up at the end. That's the amount which has been saved from going to landfill.

The ones I've been to, they had all sorts of stuff from furniture via clothes, books, toys etc to a new and unwrapped bog seat! Mostly it was quite good quality.

I don't know where the ads are, but I've seen them in the past for the ones at the community centre.

ETA: It's not a "swap shop" as such, ie you don't necessarily have to give anything in order to take.

I once went to one where they even had things like kids' bikes! It didn't look to me like people were "taking advantage" of the free stuff (ie nobody looked like a dealer).

    • I’ve tried to find details of surgeries being held before but not found any. The section of the Southwark website that details councillors’ surgeries says that: Your locally elected Councillors will be holding a roving surgery programme in the Dulwich Hill area to enable residents to raise any local issues. Residents will be notified by letter in advance of the date, time and specific streets/roads where the surgery will take place.  Surgeries are not held in August, on Bank Holidays, Easter or in Christmas Week.  Dulwich Hill Ward Councillors I’ve never seen any notification of surgeries being held, including on the DH councillors’ social media accounts. I don’t know if any other residents of Dulwich Hill have? Neighbouring wards all seem to have times and places posted for surgeries.
    • I wouldn't feel too bad about that. It's one of the few degree areas that you can do a BA or a BSc in, so it's a fairly wide-ranging and complex subject. Certainly Truss, Kwasi and Reeves seem to struggle with it.
    • I can't access the article - what's the gist?  I took the markets getting jittery when she was crying at PMQs to be a sign that they trusted her. But maybe it was because they were simply worried about any form of instability.  The NIC hikes have stymied the economy, which we could all see a mile off. Will a wealth tax improve things? Does anyone here think the trickle down has any impact and that chasing out the super rich will help things? Or are we just seeing off the biggest contributors to the economy? And has the Kwasi approach ever worked anywhere else?  Economics is not my strong point at all, I'd love to know others' opinions, but it seems to be she has few options, especially as the party is so divided.
    • does either of them have a surgery? probably not over summer, but I thought they had to give the opportunity for their constituents to meet them.
