House refurb - advice needed re temp kitchen

Hi - me and my family (2 kids) are staying in our house during a side extension / kitchen refurb (basically knocking everything down and rebuilding, so lots of work).

Will take around 3 months so am looking at temp kitchen options. Builder doesn't offer the temp kitchen so I will need to either look at what we need to build our own (issue being water connection in the main I think, kitchen appliances should be fine) or get a company to come and build one.

Has anyone had one built by a local handyperson/company/builder and if so any advice?

yes- builders put in a temp kitchen in our son's bedroom (this was also being refurbished).

We relied on a portable electric hob thing that we bought from IKEA only ?35 and made sure that anything that needed to be cooked didn't need to go in an oven.

They plumbed in our w machine.

I'd push back on your builders, tbh, and get them to do it. If they're closing off the plumbing etc to knock everything down it doesn't make much difference for them to reroute it to a temp kitchen so they should be able to rig it up for you quite easily (for a price, I'm sure, but probably still cheaper than getting someone else out).

We had a dishwasher, sink and a washing machine plumbed into the back of our living room when we were doing ours. We literally had a section of the old worktop blanced over the top of the freestanding appliances with the sink sitting in the gap in the middle - a bit precarious but it did the job. We bought a little mini electric oven which had two rings above it - it sat on top of the worksurface so I had to stand on a stool when I was cooking so I could see what I was doing! Ah, happy days.

Top tip - buy a load of big plastic storage boxes with lids from AJ Farmer as all your food will get covered in dust otherwise! Good luck...

We bought a little free standing sink unit, a couple of cheap tables and a small induction hob from IKEA. Added a decent combi microwave/oven. That served us well for 5 months.

Our builders did a neat job of shifting our oven, dishwasher, fridge / freezer and washing machine into our dining room while our works have been taking place. Didn't take them long and it's been a really way of reducing the disruption.

We?ve done something similar - kitchen set up but in a very large hallway with microwave, fridge freezer, toaster and kettle. Used old piece of worktop and added in shelves for food storage. Builder helped with moving it all and setting it up. They set up the washing machine in one of the bathrooms and took care of everything including moving it upstairs. I am on the look out for a portable hob if anyone has one to sell! Thanks!

We bought the Tillreda job from IKEA. ?35 and perfectly fine.

We had a few salvaged units to hold cutlery, crockery, pans and some food stuffs and on top of this unit put the kettle, microwave, toaster and Ikea hotplate (as mentioned above). We added a freestanding shelving unit for other kitchen stuff, and had the builders plumb in the fridge and dishwasher. No sink - we used the dishwasher and the washbasin in the downstairs loo - water and waste for dishwasher and fridge came from the downstairs cloakroom, and because we had no sink, we only needed the cold water plumbed. This was a very space saving solution. We also relied heavily on the barbecue - I even barbecued with a head torch on!

Thanks for all your tips. Builder has left our sink, fridge and washing machine and working around them for now so all good. We bought a combi microwave with proper oven and portable hob. All more time consuming but fine so far.
