Lux Thai

Hi folks. Just had dinner here tonight and it was really lovely! Everywhere seemed incredibly quiet....maybe that's to be expected on a Monday. My only comment would be that they need to make it look more inviting from the outside - we'd already decided on Thai so weren't that bothered. I can see though, that it doesn't look that exciting - some different lighting and a few more authentic Thai or Asian touches would go a long way I think. Really don't think it would take much. Anyway, a lovely meal and very nice service - definitely worth supporting!

If you want Thai, The Begging Bowl in Bellenden Road is the place to go (that's probably the one you are thinking of, Miss SE22). If you can afford it, as it isn't cheap - but very good value as the food is excellent.

I was never impressed with the food at Sema Thai, and the last straw was a truly revolting meal one New Year's Day, after which we never went back.

I have only eaten once at Lux, one Saturday lunchtime, and was less than impressed, unfortunately. I had pad thai with tofu, and they made it with that soft silken tofu - what were they thinking? Even apart from the tofu, I didn't think it was that great. Cheap, though.

Personally I'd rather have one delicious Thai meal at The Begging Bowl than two or three at Lux (or the Thai Corner Cafe, which I also gave up on years ago).

I guess where I've been to Thailand several times I know what good Thainfood should taste like, last few times I've found even Thai corner cafe has gone down hill. Sue I've never been to this Begging bowl but will defiantly ive it a try!! My favourite Thai is Su-Thai on Cold Harbour Lane!! Shitty location so they have to work hard to get a good name for them selves.

If you've been to Thailand then you will immediately recognise the authenticity of the Begging Bowl food :)

Having said that, although it all tastes Thai, not all the ingredients are necessarily Thai - they had sorrel, samphire and razor clams on the menu when I was there :))

Although, eating in a country doesn't necessarily mean good food. I was very disappointed with most of the food I had in India - bland and aimed at tourists who wanted food which didn't taste of anything much.

Must have eaten in the wrong places, obviously.

When it comes to eating abroad I always eat where the locals eat :) same in England for Indian food, well when I grew up in balham we used to eat out in tooting, if you see lots of indian people in there then it must be good food!! Lucky you going to India though .... I loooove the indian sweets lol

True, the food is not expensive.

But nor, in my experience, is it good :(

    • It wasn't an antique and bric-a-bac shop but an antique market with a number of different traders, the cafe supported all the dealers in bringing in custom, and was good enough to generate trade for them. It was Rodney Franklin's and his partners enterprise, he previously had an antique shop in Queenstown Road in Battersea. His late wife ran the cafe (she was a very fine actress, it was a 'resting' job).  It was on the corner of a junction on the left as you head towards Camberwell. And almost opposite, if memory serves at all, an MFI style furniture outlet.
    • i used to go there in the late 80's and '90s (?) the food was served cafeteria style and there was limited choice, but what there was alays tasted amazing!  The garden was an absolute paradise, you could sit in it to lunch in the summer!  i've tried to locate its site but Walworth Road has changed so much since then - does anyone remember the house number?
