Dog getting ill - Walking in the Rye

Dear all,

I am a concerned dog owner, I have a lovely, lively Cockapoo and after a morning stroll in the Rye, my dog has been having serious diarrhoea and has stopped eating and become very tired in her bed.

I have taken her to the vet twice now and they have taken blood, but can't diagnose anything.

I am concerned that she may have ingested something, and wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience.

All advice greatly received.

I don't own a dog but I am aware of talk of a gastro bug doing the rounds .There were reports of a nos of cases near a NE seaside and now of cases inland .

Whether it's "just" a seasonal thing like norovirus in humans I can't say .Sorry ,no help ,I know .But I do think if it's on my radar as a non dog owner that maybe there is more of it than normal .

There has been no vomiting, just a lack of appetite and energy now.

I think there was a case, or suspected case, a little while back where poison put down for rats was implicated, although I think traps are used now around the pond in the Rye. Dog digestions are generally stronger than peoples, so food which was 'off' worries them less than it would us. If the vet has checked for e.g. blockages (which could put an animal off its food) I would hope that time would be a healer here.

Thank you Penguin. There is so much rubbish in the Rye, my dog has found human vomit, a raw chicken and a dead pigeon in the past..............I think I won't be letting her off the lead......!

The vet thinks its a virus or something that will pass.

24 hours in, she is still no better.

Our dog had the same 'bug' a few weeks ago but it only lasted around 2-3 days. Heard from a few dog owners on Peckham Rye and Goose Green that their dog had the same bug.

Hi My dog had that bug from walking in Dulwich park. The vet said to hand feed it boiled white fish or chicken then gave it an injection to stop the vomiting. We made sure it had water and was hydrated. The boiled white fish and chicken hand fed did the trick. Hope this helps.

My dog has had it as well. No vomiting but passing blood clots and not herself. Course of antibiotics seemed to have sorted her. Apparently, they pick the bug up from the ground. Vet told us nearly every dog they're seeing currently has this bug. My friend's dog has just had a second visit to the vet as still refusing to eat. He's been given an appetite stimulant. I guess, like humans, the bug can manifest itself differently in different dogs.

My dog Kizzey has had it too

It?s not par i but it is a big

Kizzey was sick twice but mainly bile as not eating and diarrhoea like water .

She wouldn?t even eat chicken and rice but that?s the first thing she did eventually eat and now is fine .

It lasted a good five days till normal

Our little dog had it as well. He's all recovered now but the symptoms lasted around a week or so. I am also in a Pom whatsapp group and a lot of the owners mentioned that their dogs had had something similar too. Definitely seems to be doing the rounds.

Lots of dogs locally have been ill like this, my own among them. Puking a bit, and then off food and lethargic. It's not bad though. Give it four days, and the dog will be back to normal.

I am not a dog owner but I have noticed there is a lot of rancid standing water around Peckham Rye Park - and lots of dogs have been drinking it. May be nothing, but thought worth sharing.

Update.

My dog was released from the vet yesterday evening, after a day of investigation and being on an IV......

She is on antibiotics and anti sickness meds.

She was very sleepy last night and this morning she was waiting and wagging her tail...

All back.

The vet said every test they carried out was clear, at great expense.....

So it must have been a bug or a virus.

She has responded so well to antibiotics.

I'm glad to hear your dog is feeling better. There's a sickness bug going round, so many dogs have had it!

It is common knowledge, all the local vets are telling owners that there is a sickness bug going round. They carry out blood tests to check for any other causes and also keep an eye on the dogs for dehydration, administer anti sickness medicine etc. Not sure what else the vets can do. I am guessing as a dog owner you'd still be concerned though, hence the initial post. I'd be surprised if the vet in question didn't say that it was likely to be a bug although BillyOcean didn't mention that
