Buying a watch for a teenager!

My step daughter is about to turn 14 and has said she'd like a watch for her birthday. We'd really like to just buy it so that it's at least a bit of a surprise but have no idea what kind of style to choose. We've been looking around at places like this..http://www.tictactime.co.uk/shop-online-watches-ice-watch-_______1____2213_1___________________________.html and the colourful ones seem quite popular at the minute but should we go for something more calssic? Is she too young for that? Are we completely mad to think we could choose one??

The colourful ones look great, but I would buy from a shop local to her & give it with the receipt in a separate sealed envelope & the understanding that she's free to change it if she wants to. Teenagers eh? A nightmare to shop for :)

How about a swatch, she could be taken in to the shop to choose it as part of a day out kind of present? They aren't too pricey but durable and ,lots to choose from. Think there is a shop on Oxford St.

My 15 yr old daughter really likes the ICE watches if thats any help. They do range in price , she has a white one with little diamantes around the face .

My 14 year old also wanted a watch as a present last Christmas. She's had a couple over the years but of course their tastes change when they hit teenage years.

On her wishlist was a watch from Casio (burgandy digital face and silver type strap ?28 on the ASOS website). Something I wouldn't have thought she would like but daughter has worn it every day since Christmas. Had to have the strap readjusted.

I would also go with a local shop with lots of selection so it can be taken back if not approved of!

I have been looking for some data on the subject for a while and can't find any descent and recent data that would indicate how many people buy wrist watches and what is the revenue it generates.

Anyone has some information on this?

Amazon - Casio digital watches LA670WGA, the silver and the gold v in. V retro. Great self adjustable wristband and at ?15ish no real stress around loss/breakage. Bought eldest son chunky 'man's' version. Well received.

Brilliant, thanks. I think I'll go with the local shop idea. There are a few things that I would have said she'd hate and she's loved them. Teenagers! I'm sure I wasn't that difficult at that age.....;)
