I know it's not much to go on but I'm trying to remember the name of this author, or her book. It was published quite recently I think and was written by an American woman writing about the American south- kind of a family saga covering several generations. I think it won a prize and it's her first novel. Can anyone help?

I'm sure the lovely people at Cheners bookshop in Lordship Lane could help you track it down! They will have lists of newish books, I'msure. They did for me once when Id seen a book review, even though the book wasn't out yet.

Though I didn't buy it there blush as my daughter bought it for me for Christmas.Sorry Cheners!

Hi. Try. "Big House Dreams" by someone called Susan or Carol de Chesere-Boyle

authors name probably wrong but search by title will get you there.

Hope this ends your search.

Right, I'm going to hijack this thread.

an anyone tell me the name of a British novel about 4 friends who meet every year to go on a mystery weekend to celebrate one of their birthdays. This time they go over to Ireland, where one of the blokes has a bit of a shady history, and they get involved with some dodgy characters. There is a woman who has a snake tattoo all down her arm, and there was a photo of a woman on the front cover with said tattoo.

I ask because I read it once and enjoyed it, then leant it to someone and their flat burnt down along with the book.

One of the 4 friends was the narrator (a bloke) another was (I think) called Harry, and he was a minor celebrity. There was a woman, and another bloke who they called "The Greek". I believe the greek and the woman had a love / hate relationship.

If that's rung a bell, I'd be really grateful.

Whilst we are at it- does anyone know the name or author (it might be Kurt Vonnegut) of a sci-fi story or book where somewhere in the book there are pieces of skin falling from the sky and there is stuff about old people- would dearly love to read it again.

    • https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/funeral-for-tony-slattery I never knew what happened to Ton Slattery after the brilliant improvisation comedy show Whose line is it anyway? For those old enough you'll remember it was a mix of American and British comedians hosted by Clive (forgotten surname)... just read he sadly developed mental health issues that impacted his ability to work but that he'd had much better last few years and been doing comedy tours again in the UK. His partner is fundraising for the funeral but as he remains special to many who grew up watching that show he's got far more than the original target amount. His partner and he had been together 40 years. Amazing and heartwarming love...

    • Yes, it would be great to see them nationalised. Along with the other water companies they seem to have a great business model: -submit a 5 year plan to the regulator asking for yearly price increases to cover the cost of improving the infrastructure and get them to approve it - carry on paying handsome dividends to shareholders and eye watering salaries to senior executives  - fail to achieve the infrastructure targets at the end of the five years, make some excuses and draw up the next plan Magic!
