Clearly tge warning signs started when Clinton's shut up shop, however if Smiths had re-organised the store, sold things people wanted at reasonable prices and interacted with customers in a helpful manner they would have stood a good chance of survival. Especially as they have a captive audience being the only local stationary/book shop in the area.

I'm with SJ....all these changes/ closures are market forces in action. We don't go to shops to buy books anymore....I buy all mine online because they are cheaper and I can get whatever I want, no matter how obscure. Old established retailers need to change their business models to reflect that, or they will die.

The other factor is disposable income. The local demographic of Rye Lane do not have the kind of disposable income required to sustain the kind of niche (or more expensive chain) shops that everyone seems to crave for LL or Bellenden Raod. Again, just another cold hard fact. Too many people are struggling financially at the moment.

Not to mention the supermarkets. Why would you go into Smiths for a RRP hardback when you can go into Tesco and buy the same book for under ?10.

Morrisons will become the defacto chain 'Newsagent' in Peckham from next week, it also sells a limited selection of chart and back catalogue paperbacks.

Totally agree.

I have been expecting both of them to go under for years, can't understand how they've kept going .....

    • I'm interested to know why you say that? They both sell the same kind of thing, they both have own brand products, and unless I've got it completely wrong, they both seem to be trying to attract the same kind of customer? I would have thought a Waitrose and an M&S so close to each other would have split the customer base (?not sure of the correct term) for both of them? People might shop in both, but I'd have thought each store would still lose out on sales?
    • I thought of going to the States for the World Cup.  But I just can't - Trump, the nonsense of entering the States and what UEFA has done to the sport including enlarging the competition and selling out to Gulf/Middle East States has put me off. I found an article on the likely move of some European football overseas which prompted me to start the thread https://thefsa.org.uk/news/uefa-gives-go-ahead-for-overseas-competitive-fixtures/
    • Unfortunately we can see from the history of the Israel -Palestine situation that a peace accord now won't necessarily lead to long-term peace and statehood for the Palestinians. This has been going on for decades, ever since the Palestine authority gave refugee status to Jews fleeing the Nazis in the 1930s and 1940s. Britain has a shameful role in handing the problem on to the League of Nations and since then the world has watched on and done nothing or very little.
