Hi - we used floorsanderhire when we moved into our new house, all much of a muchness I'm sure but they were fine. Weekend hire, including an edger, came to about ?100 once the cost of the sanding belts is included. No need to get a professional in if you're reasonably competent, it's not difficult. My tips: Don't be tempted to use too many belts, they last longer than you think. Keep the sawdust (You get charged for not emptying the bag anyway) and use a pva/dust mix for gap filling between the boards, be prepared to get hot and messy cos it's knackering and requires patience. Always sand down the length of the boards, and not across, once you've finished and done a good three coats of varnish you'll get a great finish...

I cant recommend Mark and his team at http://www.floorsanderrental.co.uk/sandingservice.html 020.8698.2010 enough. They recently sanded and stained my lounge, study and kitchen floors.

They really looked beyond saving and they have brought them back to looking like new again. His guys where fantastic, very professional and friendly. They left the place clean and tidy every night and their machine where really dustfree.

I'm going to post another recommendation about them i'm so pleased.

Highly recommend give them a call.

My top tips would be to send any pets to kennels for the weekend as the noise was too much for our dog!

Also it is really important to fill between the boards-it is a faff, so the first couple of rooms I did I didn't bother but it makes the house draughty and freezing in winter!

Also I would buy top quality varnish as I have found that they all look the same at first but the more expensive stuff definitely wears better (3 x dogs so I know...)

Finally I'd also say you do get a better finish from a professional. If I'm redoing the back hall where it is mostly rugs, I do it myself, but for anywhere on display like my living room, entrance hall etc I now get someone in, as you can really see the difference. (I use Andrew at Redeemed Floors, (www.redeemedfloors.com) who I can highly recommend if you decide not to do it yourself in the end!)

I would strongly recommend Mark and his team if you want your wooden floors done property and don't have the time to do it yourself. One of Mark's team, Zenny, worked really hard to replace dodgy boards, sand x 4, put slivers of reclaimed wood between the big gaps, filled the smaller gaps with filler, then primed and lacquered twice. All this in 2.5 days! The floor has come up a treat! Very good level of service from Mark and Zenny, very tidy, clear with communications and they know what they are doing. If I'd have done it myself I would probably have given up after the first sanding - and Zenny did this 4 times. The floors look great and are no longer as creaky as they were before. Thanks very much guys, much appreciated. PS no probs about these guys being in my home on their own, I gave Zenny the keys and he just got on with things. Thanks guys! :)

Hi Caroline thank you for your recommendations its been a pleasure working for you.

Many thanks

Mark & the team.

I used the ones in Catford a few years ago, very helpful and when one machine failed they dropped a replacement off within 45 minutes.

Use the most expensive varnish/wax you can afford (we used Ronseal Diamond Wax) as some of the cheaper stuff can yellow.

And never, never, allow decorators to put duct tape on them afterwards!

Thanks for the recommendation, we are selling Junkers 5 Litres of water based professional clear lacquer on special at the moment for ?42.00 + vat. It covers upto 50 sq/m ( you need a min of 2 x coats ).

Thanks

Mark

Unfortunately we have not had the same experience with Dylan at Artisan Flooring. After 1 month our floor developed holes, there are gaps between the floor and the wall which he left and now 9 months later it is full of holes and indents. The floor was reconditioned parquet which could well be the cause of the problem and not the way Dylan laid the tiles. But none the less, he has totally failed in customer service. He came back once to try and fix it, but just put some putty down in the holes which all sank down. The problem has in no way been resolved - we have a lovely oak floor with about 10 holes in and this number is getting bigger. What has upset me the most is that he has continually ignored my calls and failed to respond. The only way I can get hold of him is from calling from a friends phone. Dylan is a really nice guy, which makes it all the more upsetting. i'm sorry but I had to write on here to say please don't use him.

    • Great shout. They do need the extra fat when it’s winter, but don’t use fat balls from April as they are dangerous for nestlings as the babies can choke on lumps of the fat. When it gets milder switch to suet pellets as they are harder and don’t melt (the grease is bad for feathers.
    • Rather alarmist. There is unlikely to be snow this week, but even if there is that is natural and wildlife adjust accordingly. There are fewer insects to eat due to what humans have done to the planet over the decades.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decline_in_insect_populations  In particular: Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: Agricultural Chemicals: Climate Change: Pollution: Invasive Species: There is even a case for not feeding birds due to the spread of disease through feeders, greenfinch population was decimated.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/24/should-we-stop-feeding-birds-what-happens-if-we-do-and-does-it-spread-disease   I do feed the birds but keeping a watching eye on the evidence.   And I try to grow insect and bird friendly plants including attempts at a meadow.   There could also be an argument for not keeping cats as these may decimate bird populations.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/aug/14/cats-kill-birds-wildlife-keep-indoors   You will need squirrel proof feeders and even then you may have the starlings and green squwaky things eating most of the food left out for small birds.
    • Apparently this year due to the weather there are fewer insects for the birds to eat. So please if you don’t usually buy fat balls & seeds to put out (in safe places to avoid the cats ) a plentiful supply . They really need it this year, especially with snow forecast later this week.    Thankyou
