I'm not a particular fan of Starbucks I have to say, but anything is better than yet another Poundland, nail shop, butchers, bookies or hairdresser...

Leave Rye Lane as it is FFS. Yeah OK, mess with the station entrance a bit and put a nice square there maybe, but the rest of it is poifect. Until the hair balls get big enough to knock you over, don't worry about it (they van be addressed anyway by directly approaching the businesses rather than whining on EDF about it).

I'm not sure how kindly the businesses look upon somebody like myself asking them to clear up their hair balls and rubbish. Surely this is something the council should be enforcing? It seems like they've just given up trying.

M&S doesn't mean much to me - but getting some more coffee shops

(we've got Ozzies, the cafe in Peckham Rye) does.

They don't have to be Starbucks/Nero/Costa - would be lovely if

they were local versions of the Guardian :)

They can replace the multitude of bookies (Maybe I should have a

coffee in there)

When I said it will happen. I meant Rye Lane will eventually start to get some new independents and the odd hipster hang out. They're only 50 yards from the front line at the moment anyway...

I think you're safe KK, M&S execs would never open there. Between the traditional African dress and skinny jeans brigade I can't see any of them buying threads in there. Ditto food given the price of it is beyond many.

There's an M&S on Walworth Road, hardly downtown Hampstead... ;-)

That's really why I don't get people on the M&S thread who argue an M&S Simply Food opening up is going to create stampeding hordes in ED. It?s a convenience store and there are already a few of them doubted throughout SE London.

That's the oft quoted exception but have you ever been inside? It's basically their discount store with past 6 or so seasons stock...it's where their 2003 shapeless taupe chinos and geometric ties go to die. Until recently it dad have the best original vintage M&S sign of any of their branches which I always liked. It reminded me of the St Michael label on my first pair of Y fronts when I was 5 years old.

That sounds like Hipster heaven. I think we've squared the circle!...

And the one in Eltham? There are loads of M&S stores in shabbier parts of time :)

I agree M&S is expensive, but I've done a few shops at Waitrose recently and have been surprised how many items are cheaper than the Co-op and even Tesco. Their 500g minced beef costs around ?2.80, while Co-op's is ?4! So scratch M&S - maybe what Rye Lane needs is a Waitrose!

Also, do people really think there will ever be hipster hangouts actually on Rye Lane? I just can't see it happening, the street just seems too far gone :( I can't wait til plans are approved and work begins on that grotty station forecourt.

Going to be a new independant coffee shop opening beside the Station (next door to new cycle hub) opposite the Jerk Chicken place. Aked this morning if it was going to be a bar to be greeted with, "Naw you'll no get a wee dram in here laddie!" in a very poor Scottish impersonation.

Great - only just noticed the cycle hub too. :)

Great news! I wonder how it will affect the guy with the coffee stall in the station though? Unless it's him that's opening it?

It's already the new Dalston apparently - from a few magazines.

I feel terribly left out of all the fun - maybe I should try Franks and the Bussey building cafe.

Canavans still rather scares me :)

Hi Jeremy, I don't know how you came to that conclusion, hee hee! Seriously though, it's mostly the litter and the dirt that depresses me to be honest. I'd also like to see more of a mix of shops, and businesses taking more pride in their surroundings (ie, not just dumping rubbish on the streets). I'm really looking forward to the redevelopment of the station, that's for sure! If it goes ahead that is...

    • Exactly what I said, that Corbyn's group of univeristy politics far-left back benchers would have been a disaster during Covid if they had won the election. Here you go:  BBC News - Ex-union boss McCluskey took private jet flights arranged by building firm, report finds https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp3kgg55410o The 2019 result was considered one of the worst in living memory for Labour, not only for big swing of seats away from them but because they lost a large number of the Red-wall seats- generational Labour seats. Why? Because as Alan Johnson put it so succinctly: "Corbyn couldn't lead the working class out of a paper bag"! https://youtu.be/JikhuJjM1VM?si=oHhP6rTq4hqvYyBC
    • Agreed and in the meantime its "joe public" who has to pay through higher prices. We're talking all over the shop from food to insurance and everything in between.  And to add insult to injury they "hurt " their own voters/supporters through the actions they have taken. Sadly it gets to a stage where you start thinking about leaving London and even exiting the UK for good, but where to go????? Sad times now and ahead for at least the next 4yrs, hence why Govt and Local Authorities need to cut spending on all but essential services.  An immediate saving, all managerial and executive salaries cannot exceed and frozen at £50K Do away with the Mayor of London, the GLA and all the hanging on organisations, plus do away with borough mayors and the teams that serve them. All added beauracracy that can be dispensed with and will save £££££'s
    • The minimum wage hikes on top of the NICs increases have also caused vast swathes of unemployment.
    • Exactly - a snap election will make things even worse. Jazzer - say you get a 'new' administration tomorrow, you're still left with the same treasury, the same civil servants, the same OBR, the same think-tanks and advisors (many labour advisors are cross-party, Gauke for eg). The options are the same, no matter who's in power. Labour hasn't even changed the Tories' fiscal rules - the parties are virtually economically aligned these days.  But Reeves made a mistake in trying too hard, too early to make some seismic changes in her first budget as a big 'we're here and we're going to fix this mess, Labour to the rescue' kind of thing . They shone such a big light on the black hole that their only option was to try to fix it overnight. It was a comms clusterfuck.  They'd perhaps have done better sticking to Sunak's quiet, cautious approach, but they knew the gullible public was expecting an 24-hour turnaround miracle.  The NIC hikes are a disaster, I think they'll be reversed soon and enough and they'll keep trying till they find something that sticks.
