I believe it was performance related and they weren't happy with his record since January, two wins in their last eleven matches. He did the job that he was paid to do, i.e keep them up. Not an easy job at a club like Watford with a relatively tight budget and a small squad of players.

But I suppose he knew what he was getting into, after all they sacked the manager that got them promoted...
