The parts do not move so not used to tension / bend wood..

I do not therefore think it is a tool.

Perhaps part or a display stand. Central hole tightened round upright pole..

Then smaller rods that fit in the groves on the main arm.

Possibly to hold Display lighting.

Just to expand on my original post, the "item" came together with other wood working tools - plane, set square, brace, mortice gauge, rebate plane etc etc all these items were in the side cupboard of the woodworkers bench which I acquired from the owners widow.

He hobby was carpentry.

All said , I am convinced it is some sort of tool associated with carpentry. The two outer bits each have a small leaf spring to keep the jaws apart.

Any further suggestions would be most welcome.

As someone who done chemistry at school and held a Saturday and beyond job at Boots The Chemist in that Clapham Junction I'd've said that looked far too woody and thuggish to clasp a test tube.

But as Lou Reed groaned in that song on 'Berlin' 'juuust goes to show how wrong you can be'.

Blimey.

Wishing them all the best of luck in their retirement. Wishing all their customers (including me) luck in finding another garage as honest, helpful, efficient and friendly as they were.
