Whatever the merits of lack of of chains, supermarket express shops opening up everywhere is grimly depressing

they are very expensive.  Often seem to attract sketchy characters and need a security guard

doesn’t matter if it’s se22, Crouch End or Ludgate Circus.  Ugly banality

Was Tesco before the 711 because I can’t remember Tesco?

I've been here since around 1990 (gasp) and I don't remember a Tesco on that site either.

Am I the only one to mourn the loss of Poundland?

Will no one think of the peeps who need to buy cheap cigarette papers and filters in bulk?

You will have to walk to Peckham!

I remember Tesco- it was on the corner of North Cross Road where Superdrug is now. Very small if I remember correctly.  We shop in Pound land - having discovered that shampoo and conditioner (brand names) were only £1 each. Good selection of most things that we need on a regular basis. It is better than the one in Peckham. Never noticed loud music when I have been in there and have always found the staff helpful and cheerful.

LL has always reminded me of Crouch End. Went to Crouch End a while ago and three huge supermarkets now dominate it. Soulless.

I went to CE last weekend for the first time in 30 years at the weekend. I wouldn't describe it as soulless. Beautiful town hall with attractive square, nice bakery, restos, etc, etc. I wish LL was as nice, tbh.

And I blame the rapacious landlords for the decay!

A town square would be nice. Perhaps we could pedestrianise North cross Road and create a square at the junction of Lordship Lane. Can't imagine there would be any objections / controversy.

I bet the rents in Crouch End are higher than in ED so not sure the logic holds up.

This is probably true, but the issue is not so much the level of the rent, but the degree to which it is sustainable in the context of the local market. The Landlords locally do seem to have squeezed rents to the point where places can no longer survive in many cases.

I used to enjoy the 50p shop in Liverpool, it merged with it's sister pound shop in 1999

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/newsliverpool/lost-liverpool-shop-never-charged-more-than-50p-for-anything/ar-AA1rB1Z6

According to BoE inflation calculator it would be the £1.60 shop if still around now, although based on the increase in a pint of beer more like the £4 shop, or the reliable mars bar inflation indicator about £3.

That of course is the issue with the premise that everything will remain at a certain price.  There were three pound stores in Peckham, one had a strange strap line that many products were a pound or less, so many were over a quid (pre Covid days).

    • I wonder where he could be deported to, Hungary the obvious candidate in Europe, perhaps he would get on well with Modi?   Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage both said Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood should look at whether Abd El Fattah's citizenship could be revoked to enable his swift removal from the UK. Farage said in a letter to Mahmood: "It should go without saying that anyone who possesses racist and anti-British views such as those of [Mr Abd El Fattah] should not be allowed into the UK." So just racists views are ok Nige?

    • If it's the same one I'm thinking of, it was a little further down the road towards LL, probably where the Fresh Flower Company is today. I'd forgotten all about it, with good reason. I think it disappeared before Blue Mountain opened and became a pizza place? I once bought a carton of milk from the deli and when I opened it, it was solid. I did get my money back though.
    • But when was it posted?! I haven't posted any this year. I can't bring myself to pay the exorbitant cost of the stamps, and at least I can sort of honestly blame it on illness. If I can't hand deliver them, I send e-cards. I know it's not the same, but it's very much easier. And as for the people who still send pages of closely handwritten letters .... very admirable in terms of the hours it must have taken them to write them,  but they remind me of those spoofs eg x has just passed all their many important exams with the highest marks possible, y has just walked round the world in a week, z has just become the first person ever to be knighted twice, we are about to fly off for our fifteenth exotic holiday this year ....... Or else (or sometimes and) they are full of who has had what illnesses and accidents and other catastrophes. Is this just my relatives and distant friends? Am I somehow attracting these reams of handwritten paper?
