On the way back from Sainsburys today I stopped to ask the D Hamlets car wash service if they clean bikes and they did it for me there and then, no charge. All the nasty grit pressure-washed out of the chain in seconds. Completely made my day, they did.

And they were pretty cute, too. Bit of a Diet Coke break moment.

Anyone else had an uplifting moment in East Dulwich?

They got stuck in there and did it for whatever dosh i had. next time i went back there and tipped. cute too, noticed.

Nice story!

Without wanting to sound a bit of a techie - watch that the jet spray hasn't pushed out the grease in the headset, bottom bracket and casette etc; otherwise you'll be seizing up! (the bike that is) Bike mechanics in the tour use a mixture of oil and water (bet you didn't that). Not called Sprocket for nothing!

Sprocket

I think Ms B they tend to use 'wd40' (a silicon spray) which doesn't attract and retain dirt as readily as oil.

Spraying it on is also much more user friendly than an oil can.

Use it outside as it has an initial odour and of course it is pressurised so it might stray past the area you are lubricating.

Head set is where the handlebars meet the frame.

Bottom bracket is where the pedals meet the frame.

Cassette is a tape for music or audio book as far as I know, I have no idea what that is on a bike.

SteveT, I think the cassette is the bit now going "squee, squee, squee". Hmm. Could be a job for Mlteenie as have WD40'd everything in sight, including tiled garden path (now slip hazard). The only time I really, really miss my ex-partner to the point of wanting to phone him is when something goes wrong with the bike.

Moved in to ED on Sunday and on the Monday had some home made scrumptious pies delivered which came with a very thoughtful 'welcome to ED' message in it and also our neighbour dropped in a lovely bottle of red.. We were both quite blown away by it yesterday and it really cemented the reasons why we moved here..

    • I'm not sure what to make of that, Sue  "the Lambeth Country Show will not take place in June 2026."   It's been going for over 50 years. Seems a shame to bin that one off in favour of the other four festivals.
    • We did fine for 300 years with the Royal Mail before the current "competitive" shambles was introduced. Now we have multiple companies with multiple vehicles making deliveries to the same streets every day, none of the workers are employees with decent working conditions or any job security, and consumers have to deal with x different distribution networks and apps and platforms and drop-off points... https://postandparcel.info/12422/news/uk-royal-mails-monopoly-to-end-on-1-january-2006/
    • That's certainly the narrative that runs ad infinitum on the Forum but I wonder how true it is. Speaking for myself I'm very happy M&S, Superdrug, Pret and, in the last century, Sainsbury's arrived and judging from the business they do I'm not alone.
