Cancerian
I don’t understand 🤔 why would you want to avoid a new King Charles III post box? Shouldn’t it be something to celebrate in East Dulwich? 1 2 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/365450-king-charles-3-post-box/#findComment-1716333 Share on other sites

rjsmall
There is a new post box at about 217 Friern Road that has the CIIIR cypher. Sue
For some reason post boxes feel like something from another age. The only time I seem to use them is to post my used ink cartridges to HP for recycling, or my used contact lenses and cases to Vision Direct, ditto (I don't buy the lenses from there, but they take them anyway). I hardly ever send physical cards any more, and I can't think of anything else I'd ever post which didn't require me to queue at the Post Office to get proof of sending and/or delivery. And it also feels ridiculous in the twenty first century that we are still calling our postal system "Royal Mail"! Sue
25 minutes ago, Dulwichway said: Why is that Sue? Well, what has the postal system got to do with the Royal Family? Decades ago there was a discussion about potentially changing the name, but it never happened. I think they decided to stick with a traditional type name. beansprout
As far as ED is concerned, certainly can’t called it “Speedy” anything.. I wonder if all of London has this problem? Certainly not the case where I am in the country. Not close to a town but get regular delivery much to my astonishment compared to the shite delivery service in ED which has been going on since whoever thought the idea to close office in Sylvester Road. As a matter of interest, are these post boxes in Central London? Would be a good tourist trap “photo of King Charles 3 Post Box”? If one called Time Out and asked for King Charles 3 Post Box to be added to tourist attractions - more people coming into local area equals more money spent in local shops… Edited August 10 by beansprout Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/365450-king-charles-3-post-box/#findComment-1716496 Share on other sites

The postal deliveries where I live (off North Cross Road) have been much better lately. I'm not aware of anything having been delayed. beansprout, I'm wondering why you are taking so much interest in East Dulwich matters if you have moved to the country? Do they not have local forums out in the sticks? 😀 Edited August 9 by Sue Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/365450-king-charles-3-post-box/#findComment-1716500 Share on other sites

I just wondered, as you have mentioned several times on the forum that you have moved to Devon/the country, and I got the impression that you were glad to be out of London, so I assumed that you were no longer living in ED! If you've been part of a community for a long period then you don't just lose interest if you move out if it, there are lots of people on here who moved out of SE22 years ago, maybe they grew up here, had a family here, longed to stay here having lived here for decades because it felt like home but couldn't afford to. It's not odd that someone who has invested a large part of their life in a certain community doesn't just erase it from their mind if they move out. I grew up and lived in BlackHeath for 25 years, went through many rites of passage there, witnessed the births and deaths and weddings of my friends, knew every shop keeper, every square foot of the place, had many of the most formative and important experiences of my life there, and ultimately that will always be the place I think of as home. If someone had questioned or mocked why I remained interested in the community after I moved to ED I would have been perplexed to say the least. Whatever perspective you have on monarchy, I would have thought being skeptical/cynical about having our Royal Family in its current state is a perfectly legitimate "proud British" stance to have - all that taxpayers' money, profiting from our crumbling NHS, plus the challenge to proud democratic (waves around Magna Carta with patriotic pride/naivieté) norms like transparency and equality under the law.. On the post boxes themselves, afraid my own old-fashioned and nostalgic instincts kick in - I rather like them as one of our nation's benign historical legacies/quirks, without interpreting them as royalist bastions. I'll keep an eye out, just like I did for the Olympic gold ones.
